Bands you loved; then hated

That's why you should never write your first album. Or any of the ones after it. What you have to do is figure out how to play three chords in any number of combinations that you can still manage with a quart of bourbon in you and that still make perfect sense to an audience full of bourbon, weed and any number of white powders that make their eyes point in two different directions. That, a killer bass player and a drummer that lives on bourbon, uncooked meat and a lot of that white powder should just about ensure success.

"Hate" is perhaps too strong a word for it, but Metallica is the band this calls to mind for me.

I was in early with them, having the good fortune to be a customer at Rock & Roll Heaven in NJ in the early "80's, which led to me being handed a promo copy of Kill Em All when I was a junior in high school. They could do no wrong for me from then on, through ...And Justice For All. The "Black Album" lost me almost completely, and I've never felt the love for any of their output since.

I meant of bands you played in while living on bourbon, uncooked meat, & white powders. Unless you guys pressed singles of all your material? Sadly, 90% of the bands I played in from age 22-27 blew all our money on the aforementioned vices and so couldn't afford mastering/pressing fees.

And the ones that did release vinyl sucked.

When I first saw Rainer Maria in the Chameleon in 1997 I was blown away. But sometime in the early 2000s they started putting out music I did not like very much. But They were so good to see live, and it was crazy to see a room full of hardcore kids swaying back and forth to their tunes.

Yeah, 7"s. Funny story, I came home to visit the family once. My dad has a decent vinyl collection he's kept from his teenage days. I was going through it and found 2 7"s from one of my bands. One was a limited edition, hand numbered 8/10, with a different cover. My mom had gone down to the record store just to get it. When it comes to my stuff, she's a collector.

I stole it from her.

They would be another significant example for me. Certainly through The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, and probably Mother's Milk, they were doing good work. Then they got mixed up with Rick Rubin, and Anthony decided he could be some sort of soul singer. Game over.

Wilco for me. I liked 'em when they were still pulling that Uncle Tupelo roots-punk, then the "Summerteeth" powerpop. Shit, even YHF was good, but I've stopped caring about them since then. Eh.
