    How heavy are Redwings?

Just checked out their heritage site and saw they made a crepe soled ankle height shoe. If the weight is not too out there it might solve my touring shoe issues.

Shoes take up a lot of room in panniers. So I've been looking for a shoe I could wear on camping tours that would be decent to ride in, work for light hikes and still be acceptable at moderately nice restaurants and hotels when roughing it gets old.

    I don't wear cleats touring.

I used to wear approach shoes. Scarpa makes some, the Zen and Mojito. Stiffer than typical day hikers but with somewhat smoother soles and laces to cinch down on shoe movement. I think they look nice. There are other brands - Asolo, Garmont, Zamberlan, etc.

Who's got sizing advice for red wings?

I don't know what to compare to.
    46 Sidi
    45.5 Northwaves
    44 Common Projects
    10.5 Vans
    10.5 Sperry
    11.5 Nike

Maybe an 11 in Red Wings with thick socks? Or are their model sizings all over the place?

Brandon try one size smaller than measured size. I normally measure a 10 and on my Iron Rangers and 9160's wear a 9.

Go find a Redwing store or dealer and try some on if you can. The different shoes and boots use different lasts and have differing fits. Before ordering my shoes (through the store) I tried on a few boots made around the matching last to pick a size.

If you are used to sneakers or other soft shoes note that they are thick leather, and the fit will change with use and break in.

+1 on this, most Redwing stores will do a good old fashioned job of properly fitting you and then they keep a record of what you bought,
Makes it easier the next time you go in.

Indeed- when I went in they looked up a 4 year old purchase and asked me if I was still pleased. I was wearing those boots at the time and it was pretty easy to say "yes".

No experience, and I am usually a fan of most things Stumptown, but generally speaking, those are some ugly boots.

The Danners are retro styled hiking boots. I don't know how many will ever see the trails though.

Thanks for all the advice on Red Wing sizing. I went with another brand for now. I think I'm going to start a "recent purchases" thread so we can show off the cool stuff we buy rather than only the things I can't buy (Things I want ..).

BTW, I had 1 pair of Redwings that lasted me through highschool and another that lasted me through college. can't get any better is one is looking for a real work boot.

I remember working in a canalope and onion shed in south texas the summer between my jr and sr yr in high school. we were stoked to get minimum wage. a good day was 16 hours. I didn't have two nickels to rub togther, but I would give most anything to have the fitness I had back then....................

redwings are tops in my book.

    cheers,
    shaner

New vSalon rule - no shoes of any kind posted that don't come in at least a 14. I was all jazzed up about a pair of 9011s :-(

The Chippewa 20065 is similar, and comes in a 14.
