I'm in the same line of work and a closet dandy. My captain just shakes his head at the barbour jackets, Paul Smith suit (only for trial / court), trickers brogues etc that I show up for work in.

Once heard (did I read it here?) of a judge who sent a lawyer to change shirts before continuing with a trial. Apparently a pink shirt is inappropriate for the courtroom.

I recently testified in federal court. I looked good. Our side won.

I mentioned that story here. It was relayed to me by my wife who is in state district court just about every day. Be on the safe side if you go to court - wear a white shirt and a dark suit.

As for the cop, I think we need more like him. The GQ interview gives the impression that he's very self-aware and aware of how he is perceived by his community. The in-your-face "command presence" thing frequently taught in police school doesn't work with a large segment of society; this guy is far more likely to get the job done than a traditionally attired officer with those people who really chafe at pushy cops.

I agree. That whole adversarial automaton thing starts right in the academy. I don’t get it at all, and try to wean younger guys off that crap one rookie at a time. Another part of the problem is the insular and homogenous culture that the job engenders. Back on topic: I think that cop needs to lose 20lbs.

Technically not a cop. But a government employee.
