Default how do you do your oatmeal?

first, let me say, great idea wade

this is not haute cuisine but it is super easy and an awesome way to start the day:

1/3 cup of Bob’s Red Mill high fiber oat bran hot cereal*
1 tablespoon of Bob’s Red Mill whole ground flaxseed meal*
1 cup of Rice Dream original (not vanilla) enriched rice drink*

step 1: combine 3 ingredients in bowl large enough to accommodate expansion during cooking
step 2: microwave on high for 1 minute 30 seconds**
step 3: stir for approximately one minute while hot cereal thickens
step 4: wonder why anybody eats rolled oats or endures the time and mess with steel cut oats

    _______________________________
    *adjust ingredient volumes to taste
**for two servings microwave for 3 minutes 15 seconds

I guess I'm old skool or just don't know better, but I do the whole oats thing. Soak them overnight and then cook them on the stove in the AM

    Texture.

Your thing sounds very porridge-y which is nice sometimes, but more often I want to notice the oats.

The pre-soaking steel cut oats thing definitely works.
But after going through all the varieties of Bob's: scottish, steel cut, 12 grain, 10 grain, etc. etc. I'm back to plain ol' rolled oats. Bulk section or costco. They're the right balance of texture and quick-cooking and man are they inexpensive.

    Add-ins, any of:

homemade brown sugar (just mix molasses into sugar, duh)
    walnut halves and pieces
    shredded coconut
    chopped apple
chopped peach (this is my favorite when in season)
    maple syrup
    honey
    dried cranberries

Bob's Steel Cut oats, ideally brought to a oil and left to soak overnight, with shake of salt in the water
Big spoonful of natural crunchy peanut butter
Blueberries or something similar either fresh or frozen
Touch of maple syrup or honey depending what I have

Hey i'm full of ideas, some are good. It's the follow-through that makes a difference and that requires yous guys. Looks like we're off with a strong start.

aye, oatmeal-that and pear preserves are two things i got burned out on as a school kid. oatmeal cookies now...that was probably the first thing i ever baked...and they're still good-same old recipe from BC's Children's Cookbook. but this ain't no cookie thread.

On long rides, I sometimes take a packet of instant oatmeal in my jersey and Pixie-Stick that thing at about 40 miles in.

Enlighten me. What is the deal with the pre-boil and overnight soak? If I start with steel cut oats in the 1/2C and 2C water proportions they are ready from the start in 30 minutes including bringing the water to boil. Does it significantly reduce cooking time? I don't have to leave the house to go to work, so that's not a big issue in my case. I did see where Alton Brown did them overnight in the crockpot on low to have them ready pronto. Just curious. I have to try the blue berry thing as I just picked a gallon a couple of weeks ago.

    In order, I...
    1. get out of bed
    2. microwave half a glass bowl of water until boiling
    3. dump in enough Bob's thick rolled oats to look 'right' (careful -- super-heated water will 'explode' if you add oats all at once)
    4. cover with a glass plate
    5. shower/shave/dress and it's ready (modulo some milk and maple syrup and cinnamon)

it requires a slow cooker, but it's great. the Alton Brown Steel Cut Oats recipe rules.

    1) 1 cup steel cut oats, 3 cups water, half a cup of half and half
    2) tons of dates, cherries, a cinnamon stick or two, raisins
    3) leave crockpot/slow cooker on low overnight
    4) wake up in the morning to magical oatmeal.

Bobs organic, extra thick, rolled oats
    raisins or cranberries or both
shreded coconut (if i have it)
    SALT
    water to cover plus
    microwave 3 minutes
    butter
    brown sugar

I have a buddy that crockpots a weeks worth of steel cut every sunday and micros a portion every morning. Works for him, I'm not a fan.....

Odd, I do the Bob's Steel Cut Oats as well, but it only takes about 20 minutes.

1> Start 1c milk on high on the stove.
2> When it begins to bubble, add 1/4tsp of salt and 1/3c of steel cut oats, turn the heat to low and cover for 17 minutes.
3> Remove from heat, stir in flaxseed meal, raisins, chopped walnuts, coconut flakes and a touch of maple syrup, eat.

I can't eat the rolled oats anymore, too goopy. Steel cut oats have great texture. Oddly, I actually got into the steel cut oats after getting a sample from Bob's Red Mill at Gloucester last year.

Open packet of instant oatmeal (McCanns, Trader Joes etc...) splash of hot water from the tea spot on the coffee machine at work.

I like the consistency to be that of cookie dough...It almost taste like I'm cheating.
I will not eat porridgey soupy oats.

    Adding raisins on occasion

We eat it raw here at Musgrave HQ. It's actually the cereal of choice for the girls (and Daddy). We buy 50-lb bags of organic thick-rolled oats.

1-cup every day for me, 1/3 cup for the girls, Heather somewhere in the middle. Handful of raisins, another of walnuts, and a sprinkling of ground flax seed. On top goes a liberal dose of smoothie - usually 2 frozen bananas, 3-4 peaches, 1+ cup of frozen berries, 2 cups water, and something green (usually kale or spinach, sometimes broccoli or cabbage). Stand-in ingredients include apples, mango, and any other fresh fruit in the house. If not enough smoothie ingredients are around it's just unsweetened Silk on top.

I often substitute coffee instead of water in mine. I call it joltmeal. Some dark choc chips on top.

    Joltmeal is borderline genius.

I don't get too scientific though I keep meaning to try the overnight soak. Usually have some of the steel cut variety on hand. I make mine with water, usually adding brown sugar. Bananas if they're around (and there's no good reason for them not to be) & sometimes some milk, though not that often.
