So, Vsalonistas... I am embroiled in a back and forth about women being "intimidated" in bike shops and why there are not more women working in the bike shops. I have a lot to say about this (as you can imagine) but would be interested to hear some of your comments.

I see this sort of thing, not in bike shops since I am rarely in bike shops, but out riding in groups. In our area, rides can be quite small or huge. This week's Derby had about 85 riders. Anyway, a few thoughts:

    * The mature (read older) and experienced guys around here are generally very open, accepting and helpful to women who want to ride. Many will take no notice at all.
    * The immature are generally not like this at all.
    * We seem to have a large number of very accomplished women cyclists around here. Because of this fact, it seems that at least in this area, women who appear to be cyclists are taken very seriously.
    * I have heard complaints from women who are not experienced cyclists who complain that someone in a shop blew them off, etc.

So, is it a question of women not getting respect, or shop rats figuring that they can expect to sell to guys easier then women, or maybe shop rats who just don't feel comfortable working with women? My guess that in most cases there is a combination of enough of these things to make the difference. If some local second year hot shot with his summer job at the local bike shop sees a woman customer come in looking for a new pair of bib shorts and a new pair of shoes ... how do we want him to react ... and how do we expect him to treat said customer? Most likely he will be aware that he does not understand his customer's needs very well. As a testosterone filled individual, he won't want to admit that to anyone, and especially not to his customer. He then suggests a few pairs of shorts and points her in the direction of the shoe wall and walks away to jawbone with his friends.

Yup, this scenario sucks. But I bet it is pretty common. OK, so the answer is either education for the local hot shot or women working in bike shops. Seems to me that if a shop wants to be taken seriously by female cyclists, they will want to hire women to work there. Just my female side doing the talking..

So, today e-Richie really let 'em have it at Velo News... the whole week has been troublesome with this publication. Back in May when I interviewed on line editor Steve Frothingham, there was no indication of any turmoil at the Competitor Group offices. Makes one wonder what they are thinking - rather, IF they are thinking. I guess that leaves the door open for a new, smarter, and perhaps less biased racing journal, no?

    <sigh>

Meanwhile, don't forget that his week's show will be the interview with Tom Kellogg.... you're gonna' love it. TOC

VSalonistas! I am posting EARLY that this week's show will be a super-duper winner! Richard Schwinn will be guest #1 and our own Too Tall (Josh) will be guest #2... it just doesn't get better than this! (well, maybe, but we'll let you be the judge!) Be sure to listen in on Saturday, April 13th at 5:30PM EDT or via podcast at 6:30pm (and on iTunes)

T.K. is great because he is one of those rare folks who increases his own worth by acting as an resource for others. Also, his technical knowledge of the industry is humbly conveyed.
Now if he could do something about that huge EGO of his ;) kidding.

I wonder if Richard Schwinn remembers me? About 15 yrs. ago I attended an lecture and placed an ancient Schwinn Typhoon in front of his lectern. His comment was "gee the saddle is probably worth more than the entire bike".

I'm getting a bit chastised here domestically for keeping my compliments private, so...

just listened to the Tom Kellogg interview.
First, I've met Tom (don't really "know" him) and have heard him speak, so it comes as no surprise to me that he was a great guest. This show was indeed excellent. Diane and her interviewing was great, Greg and his formatting was great, and of course Mr. Kellogg was fantastic. I'm not sure if it's my favorite so far, but this one definitely shoots toward the top of the list.

As is typical Diane, just when you think it can't get any better...

LOL - Richard remembers most everything! I would bet he'll remember the bike if not you - but then, aren't you "too tall"?

June and I listened to the show last night. Toots is way to humble and Richard knows too much. Both of them need to be back on the show.

Tune in this Saturday, 5:30PM EDT streaming live from WJCU-88.7FM The Outspoken Cyclist « WJCU or as a podcast at 6:30pm (same station) Also on iTunes or Stitcher radio.
