I can't believe it. I am actually considering trying to run one someday and on my just-completed jog in Fayetteville, NC (yeah, we always have overnights in exotic places.....) I once again felt the twinges of the 'runner's high'.

I am no runner, but for the past few years I really can't ride much due to my job. 2-3 times per week, tops. So I jog.

I would not mind running the NY Marathon. Not at all.

I'm doing the Marine Corps Marathon the week before. Did a 1.30 ten-miler long slow run llast weekend, so seems like I'm about on track for a 4 hour marathon, with a bit of luck.

I used to joke that running was for people who hadn't heard about the invention of the draisine, but now having done it for a while (good exercise in shorter duration is practical with two toddlers), I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit. I'm no speed demon - aiming for about a 3:50 marathon time in October - but it's fun to get out there and run. But yes, the lack of equipment is a drag. Not much to discuss on the internet, either. That Runners' World forum is like watching semi-gloss dry.

The hash is a great excuse to run, but I can't find any other reasons to run.

Truth be told, if you want exercise and you are bio-mechanically right for it, running can't be beat. Some of my best memories come from when I ran a lot. I'm not talking about jogging.

thas the problem. my biomechanical feets will have no part of it. i killed them (the high-arched dogs) on concrete in the late 80's and then again in the mid 00's. they'll do a little 'cross race running, a jog for gp-start atb races (yeah we do that sometimes), but no pavement pounding.

besides, i don't want to have to learn to cobble shoes...

Not training for the NYC Marathon but I've run the Boston Marathon 5 times since 2000 (2009 was my most recent). You have more than enough time to train. I ran on the Dana Farber Marathon Challenge team and the training starts after New Year's for a mid-April marathon (though some folks do start earlier around Thankgiving). Check out Hal Higdon's web site (Hal Higdon), specifically the Marathon Training: 18 Weeks to Glory section. He lists 5 different marathon schedules from novice to advanced. As for motivation, I had a patient partner waiting for me at mile 25 and knowing they would be there kept me going. Plus, whatever pain I would feel as a result of running 26.2 miles wasn't anywhere near as severe as the cancer treatment they were currently going through. Certainly put things into perspective.

I have run a marathon and do enjoy running from time to time (trying to get back into it after my accident in December). I actualy enjoy the simplicity and lack of gear ... it's one thing I do not relish about cycling as much as I love bikes.

Today I did a trail run in the rain through the redwoods in a local park ... running through the dirt, mud, etc. on a five mile loop with a steady 1000' climb is simply great. Downhills and dodging horse %$#@! are the downsides, but for no traffic (in fact, I did not see another person period), it is well worth it.

For exercise and fun, though, heading straight out over a long climb does more for me ... I run for a bit of variety and to get some weight bearing exercise.

Look, I am not an expert on this subject, but I have done my homework and suggest that; if you want to run without injury, read Born To Run. Running related injuries virtually began with the shift to a long stride, heal forward running style and the advent of the modern running shoe.

Keep yourself healthy, Read the book and get yourself some "free running" shoes.

I have been doing a lot more running this year. I have been really enjoying the Nike Free's. Same concept as the Vibrams, but not quite as silly.
