I graduated from high school in 1969. One of my best friends bought a '69 Ford Fairlane, 4sp, 428 Cobra Jet, limited slip. Well, the Arab Embargo happened and all of a sudden these hot cars were persona non grata. My friend traded his "rocket ship" Fairlane for a 70s Pinto Country Squire Wagon, 4sp, no air-con. And he had to put some cash into the deal.

    Thumbs up Re: Automobiles

Visited the local dealership to test drive a 22 Ford(R) Explorer ST | Model Highlights | Ford.com and must say it is a very nice vehicle with 400-hp and 10-speed transmission.

Sunday was the London to Brighton Veteran Car run. All cars pre-1905.
It has been running since 1927 and commemorates the 1896 Emancipation Run.

Funny thing that. The poor fellow who was victim #1 of the Pinto firebomb lived in my neighborhood while growing up. Talked to him a few times, he seemed pissed.

Why anyone would park that ridiculously close to another vehicle is beyond me.
Especially when other vehicle owner likely does not agonize over a scratch here and there.

Some of these cars are parked by the doormen in nearby buildings who have (informal) control of various areas and park the cars of the building's residents. They stack them up to get as many in place as possible and they'll move the cars on street cleaning days. Buildings & doormen crews vary on the details of this service, but often keys are kept at the front desk just in case one of the cars needs to be moved. Tips plus annual gifts are expected and you will be reminded if you forget.

Street cleaning day is kind of a fascinating automobile ballet. I thought for sure when I first moved here that it would be an all hands on deck effort, but no, one guy moved all the cars over and then all the cars back without losing a parking space.

One of Les Maîtres at the first building we lived in said to me, "A good doorman keeps all the wives and girlfriends apart. A great doorman makes sure each one gets flowers." Sounds a bit of madmen misogyny perhaps, but it lives still. That doorman got Yankees field level season tickets every year from one of the upper floor residents.

At the end of the day it’s a farmer’s truck, adapted for extended car-camping. I mean Overlanding. A scratch here and there just adds to the patina.

In other news, my favorite truck for parking in NYC was an 80 series land cruiser on 35”s with front and rear steel bumpers. I’d squeeze that thing into the most unrealistic parking spaces and not give a second thought to who might bump into it over night.

I know! I was talking about the other aluminum can vehicles nearby. :-)

Than you'll appreciate the Volvo wagon I gave to my sister when she was living on Houston street. It was a 1980'ish monkey poop brown wagon in good mechanical shape. Before I gave it to her I disabled the door locks, violently removed the radio and kicked in the front grill. She never had a problem. Booyah.

I prefer the relatively subtle 650s I saw in Bath. But that wing does look like a nice flat spot to set coffee and a muffin after a drive.

I’m no engineer and it isn’t my style either but McLaren have never been known for superfluous styling... I imagine those gimmicks were developed under exhaustive aero testing.

I guess the idea is more to create a look that appeal to the Kardashian family while avoiding performance penalty at all cost. So yes exhaustive aero testing but it doesn't mean there are no superfluous styling gimmicks

I'm think it's unattractive as supercars go and I'm not defending the Senna, but al415 is correct. These are not styling gimmicks, all functional pieces unapologetically optimized for function over form. McLaren acknowledges this. Info from a couple of car rag reviews of the Senna.
