    Even though they are total overkill for my needs, I LOVE my Japanese kitchen knives. My only wish is that whomever inherits my knives will appreciate them as much as I do.

    Heck, any granddaughter that shows the slightest interest in cooking beyond boiling water for macaroni and cheese might get my knives long before I die.

    My offering is super pedestrian and entirely non-artisan: Nest smoke detectors.

    Who in their right mind buys smoke detectors for a hundred bucks a pop when any corner hardware store has them for ten bucks?! I know, I know.

    But the first time you burn a pizza and they don't go off, you'll be glad you bought them.

    Did I mention they're also motion sensor nightlights?
