    Default The effects of Intervals.

In running and cycling I had never puked after doing intervals.

Not too long ago it happened for the first time.

Now, every time I do them I wretch or, at the very least, dry heave.

How did these flood gates open?

Maybe you just started doing them correctly - just joking of course.
I never puke, so I hope I haven't jinxed myself.

You'd think that an allergy to frustrating, repetitive tasks would've shown up while teaching college freshmen.

I like that you brought up allergies though. Maybe the GF is allergic to my riding so much. If I slip her a few benedryl maybe she won't notice I'm gone for a few hours.

Maybe you've learnt to push to a whole new level in your training. I was brought up that puking was a positive as it meant your body ain't capable of anything more. Unless you ahd a dodgy curry the night before.

Sounds like something changed in your training and body. Can you put your finger on anything? Sudden increase in training volume, meds etc.?

    TT,

The only thing that I can figure is that I'm riding with a power meter now.

Maybe the lack of subjectivity is making me push harder, to the point of up chucking?

    Good question.

FWIW, I asked a friend who's an Ironperson and ex-bulimic. She responded with a smile "Oh yeah, the first time you puke is always the worst. Then your body decides that its ok and that its not that bad of an idea."

It's 6am. Gave the girl a dose of benedryl. Her allergies seem to be better right now. I'm going for a ride.

sounds like you done gone anaerobic, son.

    check yer max heart rate(s)?

that'd occasionally happen to me after a wicked hard sprint in a race or tt.

nothing like a cool down lap while burping all over the place...

most awesome sight ever burned in my mind was state champs tt (out there yonder in calif.), watching a guy come across the line and introduce everyone to what he had for breakfast and last night's dinner.

like tt said, maybe keep track of other things like diet, etc., to find a pattern.

How do you feel/what happens right before you puke? Is something (build up of muscus in your sinuses etc..) triggering a gag reflex of some sort?

When I was in high school before meets (HA! Speech and debate) or concerts I'd get nervous and start coughing. Sometimes to the point where I puked. This is a similar feeling: I'll finish with a set of intervals and start to cool down. Then its uncontrollable coughing which means that puking is close by----doesn't happen all the time though (like today).

I usually end up eating a later dinner and since I don't have too much time in the morning so I'm out the door with a light breakfast (2nd breakfast happens when I get to work).

Interesting... perhaps there's some kinda dysfunctional positive feedback loop going on between your upper cognitive centers and your autonomic nervous system...?

I'm curious, maybe give this a try: After a ride, maybe one without intervals initially, start coughing! Yup, start coughing on purpose and see if you can make yourself puke. No, it's not to turn you into a bulemic. Instead maybe it might be a way to train your brain to dissociate the links between the coughing, puking and level of arousal/anxiety that your body seems to have. I have a feeling if you start to purposely cough after a non-strenuous ride and don't end up puking you'll be laying down some new responses between what's going on in your head and how your body reacts. Plus the perception that YOU control the coughing and puking may contribute to the effect...
