    Dave, really liking the look of the isp. There are reinforcing bits inside? Cbn. bonded?

    Yup. The Ti seat cluster would not be stiff or strong enough without the composite reinforcer in place. Helps?

    Tom, I recently read your blog and when I read your 8/14/2013 entry, it kind of reminded me how my cycling has changed. I'm grateful to have a job but over the last 10 years or so it has crippled my cycling, something that I will simply not tolerate for too much longer, but I have found an area of cycling in which I can be useful to others, and to the cycling community. Since I have lost the fitness that I once had which has left me with an engine block that is too heavy and pistons that are under powered; I now lead my lbs's beginners ride, and help the newbies by answering questions they may have about anything cycling and lead them on a pleasant ride so that they hahopefully the

    continue riding and grow in their cycling. It's been rewarding and a pleasure thus far, I just had to get my ego out of the way first. Someone has to lead these folks and I'm honored to do so. Thanks for sharing your stories with us Tom, I just wanted to share one of mine. Thanks. :)

    Thought some might be interested to see these. When I do the drawing work for a typical road frame, I am at the computer for about an hour and a half. I know what's going to work and I rarely have to check and confirm anything. Just draw. Well, sometimes we get orders like these. If you look the drawings over carefully, you'll see that I had to figure things out very carefully indeed. No two hour drawings this time. These were all day affairs. They are both going to be great bikes and I learned a lot in the process. Post questions if you have 'em.

    Well you did encourage questions, so here ya' go atmo. If a drawing takes either two hours, or a full day, how do you get paid for this? Is the work part of the frame price going in? Or, is this design time another line item? Thanks.

    The short answer is yes, I'm getting paid as I have fitting and design time built into our pricing. What is not built in is the variability of time required for that work differential between frames. So while my margins end up being higher for frames that are easy and quick to design, this is not the case for all frames. Conceptually, charging more for difficult design work makes sense, but since I have a pretty good idea of my averages for this work over the years, I charge accordingly for the "average" frame. It is unusual that we will get frame orders like the two we had recently. In fact, they seem to come along only once or twice a year. If they become more common, I'll need to rethink what we change for these frames.

    There are many times when I need to teach myself new skills or to change my thinking and procedures at work. It is simply what we need to do in order to continue getting better as a builders and as someone who runs a business. As such, I am always looking for ways to adjust the ways we conduct our business. This includes pricing of course. But it also includes deciding on types of work we are willing to take on. In the past, we have stopped accepting some types of work and added others. Jeff and I are constantly changing the way we do things. If we stopped developing, we'd still be making frames the way we did the last time we made a frame. And that's not acceptable. So when I take time to learn new skills or add unusual and time consuming blocks to my design templates, I am building skills and data for future use. That extra time spent is not just for the benefit of one client, but for our development at Spectrum. I don't feel the need to charge each client for each hour put into their frame. As long as we are charging enough for the average frame and our material and direct labor costs are paid for, we remain viable. Good question. Thanks.
