As the cable housing comes out of the back of the ISP, it arches down and ends at the cable hanger. Jeff makes his own hangers. You can see one on the recent touring bike here. Spectrum Cable Hanger
In theory, grit could enter the brake cable housing below the hanger, but we are incorporating a cable squeegee at this point and at the end of the front derailleur cable housing as well.

Important stuff, indeed. This cardiac stuff is boring. Let's talk bikes!

We haven't offered chrome on our won frames for about twenty-five years. The long term damage it does to the frame is just too extensive. We warranty our frames for the life of the original owner and chrome work just puts us at a much higher risk. Yes, it looks great. The chromer who does restoration work for us is very good and we do trust him, but we won't subject our frames to the stuff. K?

Woo Hoo! New feature; random frame drawings! From time to time I'm going to post frame drawings from the past that may or may not represent the range of custom builds that we have done. I draw every titanium frame that we build and there can't be enough interest in my posting all of them, but a few representative ones may spur questions that I can help with. So here's the first; a commuter / touring frame for a small woman in the DC area. This frame is designed to work with 650B wheels and fenders for commuting and 700C wheels for long distance touring. Lots of fittings for full rigid fender mounting and full racks.

This is a very interesting flexibility for options which has come about through the advent of disc brakes.

Dan's frame is a full-on Ti Cross race unit. No duffer, Dan wanted a predictable bike that did not exhibit what some "predictable" bikes stick skilled cross riders with; understeer, pushing and a heavy feeling front end. Dan reports that he got all that he was looking for. Questions? Drop me a line.

Tom, can you share the name/type of pulley you used on the above bike? I've got a horrific plastic doughnut looking thing that enables front shift succes about 10% of the time. Yours looks more robust and functional.

Ahhh. Good eye. We get them from an aircraft supply company. These things are used for control cables in gliders. Just Google. You'll find a supplier on the inter-web pretty quick.

In answer to your first question: No. It would be great if we could order composite forks from ... whoever ... with not only custom rakes, but custom layups as well. We can't. At least not one at a time. When I was working with Mike Lopez at Reynolds developing the UL fork, I was able to ask him to, for example; increase torsional rigidity while reducing longitudinal rigidity. The next prototype would come through in a few days with exactly those characteristics. WAY COOL! But building forks like that, one at a time with custom layups just does not work in the real world. We had to settle on a layup that made the most sense for the most people.

We continue to make steel forks for our steel frames and have no plans to stop. We also make them for some of our titanium frames as well since we can't get composite forks with the range of offsets, clearances and fittings that we need on occasion.

Just reading through from the start of all this and couldn't help but say I have three Merlin's, 2 x Extralights (1996 & 1998) & a Cyrene (2004)...they all have the same geometry and now all have Reynolds (NOS) carbon forks on them. I have mainly used LOOK & Dedaccai forks in the past but since I replaced them all with the Reynolds they have taken on a whole new feel...

I don't own a Spectrum but just want to say thanks for your previous involvement with both Merlin & Reynolds...I love my bikes and they make my rides a joy for me!
