I loved my Rolex, but my Omega watches are wonderful.
The Seamaster gets my vote above all else. Get a stainless case,
and bracelet. Sapphire...of course. It's almost embarrassing to
say what I paid for my last Omega. I was being dragged along to
yardsales (just like getting a root canal without the fun). It was
later in the day and most of the sale had been picked-over. I saw
a box with an Omega symbol on the lid. I picked-up the box and
flashed it to my jeweler friend who was about fifteen feet away.
His eyebrows went up. I open the box, took out the watch, and
gently shook it to wind the spring. The lady who owned the watch
said, "Oh, it works!" Ok, I said, looking at the price ($10). Would
you take $5? "Well... no she replied, I really should get ten". (Yeah...
shame on me!) I reached in my pocket and pulled out the cash. "All
I have is $7." Ok, she replied. That'll do! The watch was about fifteen
years old, but almost untouched. Self-winding, sweep second hand, date.

*Breguet? Nice, but why not spend a few dollars less and buy a house?

*Rolex? The maintenance isn't too bad bad but it is more frequent than
I cared for. A Rolex on your wrist lets the world know you are better
than everyone else, but then people tend to think you're presumptuous.

*The Seamaster will run forever, is classy in the shop, at a formal dinner,
and unlike a Rolex, you don't have to trade-in your old friends to wear it.

Get an old Seamaster. People might assume you are old money.

    I'm really digging this:

Nice watch at a decent price point. Then again, I'm a sucker for the simple pilot chrono. You'll find an IWC 3717 on my wrist most days.

The 3717 just does it for me. Want one of those so bad. That was the watch that got me into mechanical watches.

If I could justify 4-5K, it would be a 3717 for sure. In the meantime I look for cheaper alternatives.

Every once and a while i need to remind myself that without pals my life would be less and the shining example some others enrich us all. This is the incredible 6306-7001 Jason sold to help provide funds for the Japanese disaster relief effort. Jasons description is below. I love wearing this watch and is in heavy rotation with my Seamaster....keeps perfect time and tough as nails.

Watch just came back from Jack Alexyon at IWW two weeks ago (has been sitting on the desk since). The watch (on NATO strap) is in amazing condition (TZ 90+). This is the uber-rare and coveted Japan-only version. IWW did the custom work several years ago.

Anyone have an Oris? I've been eyeing this one, which looks like it can be had for under $1k. Never seen one in real life, though:

Can someone recommend a sweat-proof band? My sweat salt destroys plastic-rubber bands and sweat seriously funkyfies Velcro straps. I am reluctant to go with a stainless bracelet, but it may be only practical solution.

Nylon NATOs are pretty easy to rinse and keep clean and are pretty comfortable, as well.

    +1 on the NATO straps.

There are tons of different models out there in different colors. And they're cheap. Buy more than one if you like.

When they get dirty / crusty you just yank them off, wash them with dish soap, let them dry overnight and you're good to go. They clean up very well.

I've gotten several from these guys. Lots of options.

The best NATO and ZULU straps I've found are Maratac brand. They just seem a little bit thicker and more robust which is good when using them with a heavy-ish dive watch. Colors are more limited but the typical black, grey, and green are available. I've got a maroon one too that I wear a lot.

I've had good experiences purchasing them from here:

I also am a fan of the Maratacs and I've purchased from there as well....great service.

I've had a Jones for a diver since Matt Strongin infected me with the watch bug last year. I can't bring myself to fit a big watch purchase into the budget at the moment, and I wanted something dark and mysterious, so I went for this. So far, I like it a lot:
