    Default Point and shoot

    Hey folks-

I have been enjoying my G11, but have been suffering a scratched lens for longer then I care to admit. Before I shell out to have it fixed, I'm wondering what people like for general duty point and shoots.

    Stuff I need to consider-
    1. Fairly bomb proof- (it will live in the shop)
    2. Reasonably cheap- (it will live in the shop)
    3. Quick and reliable auto focus-I often shoot with one hand while juggling something hot in the other.
    4. Better then average macro

Considering an S95, but am curious if there are good contenders closer to the throw away price category (it will live in the shop).

Thanks for the feedback and ideas-

No worries- I'm digging my current camera. I cringed a bit at the lens fix estimate being roughly half the cost of an S95, and thought I'd weigh my options before sending it in.

Edit- seems I can add a clear filter-that might solve my issues there (post fix).

    lemme clarify,

the s95 is an awesome camera but the lens isn't as nice imo.

also, IIRC the G-series lenses focused down to 1cm whereas the s95 focuses down to 5cm/2 inches.

g-series has a 5x optical zoom whereas the s95 has 3._ optical. this is a nice feature. digital zoom = cropping image + resizing so that its 10mp (cheating).

I have a G10 and it lives on macro setting at the shop.
    No flash.
    No special settings atmo.
    Totally ghetto.
If it only came with wifi I would be the happiest fukcing camper in Franklin County.

Did a lot of research about this a few months ago, settled on a Lumix GF1 with a clear filter on the lense

Great little camera and can be had cheap (at least in the antipodes)

It is a memory card with wi-fi built in. Once you set it up it will upload to most of the hosting sites. Pretty sure that it uses the camera battery for power, so you may be needing to go on the charge a bit more often. Check it out for more info.

Probably not as nice a camera as the G11, but I had a little point and shoot Olympus that was waterproof, drop proof, dust proof, etc. I once dropped it out of my jersey pocket at 25mph or so and other than a couple scratches to the finish, it was fine. Have taken plenty of decent photos underwater too. Macro was decent for my purposes as well. I'm not super picky with photos from a point and shoot, though, so it may not be up to your standards. But you could throw it against a wall and take a photo after you picked it up without worrying.

I just got one of these. Awesome for the price. Olympus XZ-1 Review: Digital Photography Review $199 marked down from $500. YOU will not find a better point and shoot for $199. I've shot a bunch of stuff in focus with low light. I'll post examples tomorrow. A local photographer got me on to Olympus cameras and I got a e pm1 for work to shoot product. ALso great for the price.

Sounds like fixing my rig is the best bang for the buck, but keep em coming. A back up is never a bad thing.

PS- My G11 has dents. I love metal bodies.

Do not get an S95 for macro, it is the camera's only weakness. It is however bombproof.
This is me falling and smashing it lens first into a rock...

After I popped the zoom back on track.

Pictures looked awesome for years to afterwards.

I like the boot in the air in that one.

Can you post a crappy macro shot so I can see what we're talking about there?
