recommend me some soul music. I'm pretty familiar with Motown and larger names, so I'm looking for the records that never quite emerged on the charts or have been forgotten. bonus if the tracks are upbeat and even danceable. I've been digging into all that "northern soul" (what a dumb name) stuff, but what else is out there? any tips? give me the authentic real deal soul.

BTW - the term northern soul refers to the north of England and clubs like the Wigan Casino and Manchester's Twisted Wheel - soul all-nighters where the music was up tempo and from more obscure artists

Try this. Candi Staton. The good stuff came out on the FAME label in the late 60's early 70's. There's an import 2004 compilation that is goodness through and through.

A lot of the 'new soul' stuff that's being released on the daptone label for example is great also, with the added benefit that you can catch a live gig every now and then.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Lee Fields and the Impressions, Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators, Charles Bradley... that sort of thing.

old soul - betty padgett - miami soul from '75 - self titled reissued by Luv N Haight records (Sugar Daddy almost became a major hit)

island soul - Dawn Penn - one listen to No, No No will do it ( ). She's done many variations of this, hard to chose a favorite

electronic soul - Greyboy - Soul Mosaic. A Case Study in Beats, Soul & Funk. Great sounding electronic grooves mixed with Sharon Jones, Quantic & others
