    Default Tie stripes

Just saw e-RICHIE's tie selections in his FNL post from this week. Noticed all of his striped ties has strips running from left high to right low. This is the norm for the British regimental, and most of the European stripes seems to run in the similar direction.

The majority of American stripe ties run the opposite direction with right high and left low. Was this an intentional design to be different, any significance attached to the direction, or just random happenstance?

The English have a practice of wearing regimental, school, or club ties. The theory behind the reversal of the pattern for american ties is that the wearer is not claiming entitlement, or being a member of something of which he is not.

Or, at least, that's the best reasoning I've heard so far.

British regimental stripes are "cut from the heart"...left to right...there is a story behind every stripe color and width. I've purchased my share of regimentals over the years from Ben Silver.

Ben Silver makes great ties. I am contemplating getting a few of my own affiliations. I will have to be cautious not to buy one to pretend something that I am not.

Will someone ask e-RICHIE at NAHBS what do his stripes mean?

From what I understand, in the states it doenst mean much unless you really are trying to be something youre not. However, in the UK, you really watch what you wear, cause striped ties mean things over there.

I own a Ben Silver tie, which although representative of an English institution, happens to be the same colors of my own school.

The tie was a high school graduation gift from a family friend. I wore it while traveling for sports events in college, and wear it regularly to this day for work. Exceptional quality.

Hmm, I have a tie given to me by a cycling coach from Germany right after the Berlin Wall came down. When being viewed by someone else, it is pinstriped striped right high to left low with a small BDR emblem near the bottom in dark blue, red and white stripes and white emblem. I wore it because it worked good with my USCF officials shirt when I worked at bigger races. I wonder if the angle of the stripes means anything?
    Good cyclists are:
Visible, Predictable, Alert, Assertive and Courteous

They also use the five layers of protection available.
    Layer 1: Control your bike
Layer 2: Know and follow the rules of the road
Layer 3: Ride in the smartest lane position
    Layer 4: Manage hazards skillfully
    Layer 5: Utilize passive protection.

While not really applicable to the conversation at hand, I saw this and thought it was cool while on the subject of striped ties in general. Back in the day at Harvard, the tie you wore denoted the sport you played.

The US college ties are a lot more obvious in the school shields and names.

I think it is kinda neat that the British ties are very subtle; only meaningful to those who are in the know, and nice colors to everyone else.
