Default Dropout replacement on chromed frame.

I want to replace a cracked driveside dropout on an older frame that I have. The back end of the frame is chromed and I seem to remember that there are some special considerations when doing any sort of repair on an area that's been chromed. Is this something I should bother attempting?

You need to remove the chrome (at least locally in the area likely to warm up- at least a shake beyond the stay/ drop out intersect) and take care while doing it.

    Rauce,

What Eric said. If you use a torch on chrome, don't breathe until it cools down. With luck maybe you can find a stainless dropout that matches the old one. Silver braze it in and it won't be too noticeable.

    Good luck!

    Thanks guys!

It's a 1010/b dropout and I have a NOS replacement on hand. Once I've put it in, do you think it would be possible to just to have the dropout and a bit of the stays where the chrome was removed re-done?

Probably not, at least as far as time versus money goes.
Just leave it as-is after the flux is removed and the area filed up.
    Or paint it silver.

One could have the whole thing stripped and re-chromed. If you are going this route, get the chrome shop to strip it before you do any work.
