Anyone on the Salon know this route?
How is it to drive generally, I presume 2 lane, 1 each way?
More to the point, how would it be this time of year??

44 to Ashland? I don't see it on the map. Road conditions depend upon the storms and getting from Reno to Oregon will require going over multiple mountain passes so it never hurt to check current conditions. Some passes will require that you have chains or other traction devices. Even the interstate has been shut down on occasion because of storms.
working my way through the Caltrans site it looks like we take 395 to Susanville and then 36 from Susanville to Red Bluff. That puts us back on I5 for the run through Shasta and over the Siskyou.
So long as to road from Susanville to Red Bluff is Ok, we're golden.
You could get snow between Susanville and Chester this time of year IF there is a whopper of a winter storm.
Ashland...?
getting a DeSalvo?
It probably will. As a backup - you can look up current conditions here: Road Conditions. Note that there is also a phone number so yo can ring it up from the road and enter your road number. The landmarks that they use to denote where problems begin and end can be arcane and very possibly make sense only if you drive the road frequently, though.
Are you looking for scenic or a direct route. Lassen is pretty cool.
70 between 395 and 99 is scenic and direct.
89, 32, 36, 44 are all 2-lane (twisty on the west slope).
...just to win a salami in ridiculous races.
google streetview.
google traffic/weather conditions.
I go up there.

Just to close this off, the drive from Las Vegas to Reno is largely uninteresting. Tonopah is worth a look as is the area around Hawthorne, and the lake.
Much of the area in between is pretty deadly ( apart from the numerous brothels). Good road though.
The drive from Reno up to Mt. Shasta was a good road, and from Susanville on was quite spectacular. Took Highway 89 and came out right at Mt. Shasta, a little bit of snow still at the top, but beyond that it was clear and fine driving.
Thanks everyone.
Anyone have any advice/info on how things are on route 504 from downtown out to Newton Corner? I'm heading out in about 40 minutes.
I've covered the sidewalks between my office and the bus stop already, earlier today (well, near enough) so I'm good there. But I have no current info on the rest of the route, including a walk up Centre Street once I get off the bus.
Thanks.
GO!
Death Valley to Vegas was fun to drive at night. So desolate my friend and I got a little creeped out. Wreck out there and I suppose they'll find your bones.

I think this post is churlish.
I, as the OP, asked for advice and assistance from the members here. I received it.
I thank those that gave it.
For this, not so much, but I guess it made it you feel better .... somehow. If it did, then it says much about you.
And I suspect that the post by bcm119 is on the mark.
Once while in college two friends of mine and I drove from San Diego to NH. We drove straight through the first night I and drew the short straw for the Texas panhandle at 3 AM. My buddies still don't know how close they came to dying that morning, because twice the rumble strips saved me from driving off the side of the road as I dozed off. After the second time I realized this was serious business and I forced myself to stay alert the rest of the way.
