RIP Chick Corea
Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (June 12, 1941 – February 9, 2021)
"He received his nickname Chick from one of his aunts, who called him 'Cheeky' whenever she pinched his cheek."

I'm crushed. He was a heavy influence in my own musical evolution.

Re: RIP Chick Corea
Ah man... that sucks.
My Spanish Heart was the first album that I bought for myself, and was responsible for getting me into high end audio. I knew I liked the music (although at the time I was on a heavy diet of Weather Report and Tower of Power) but that album was arresting in just how good it sounds. I still use Armando's Rhumba as a sort of "test track". It never gets old for me.
Mentioned in other places I marched with BD. Even though it wasn't one of my years, 1994 for me is still peak Blue Devils, and maybe even peak DCI. Always had a blast when we revisited some of these for stage shows or encores.

^^^This. I'm gutted, devastated. Because when Chick Corea was alive at least you could point to someone and say "See, it is possible for a musician to have enormous ears, a vast encyclopedic knowledge of how music works, complete mastery of their instrument, chops that are unhindered by any physical limitations, and the ability to instantly translate whatever one imagines into sound...and yet still maintain a sense of humor, grace, humility, and and almost child-like sense of wonder."
Now? Who am I gonna say that about? :(
He was a true giant.

One summer, in what I call my “lost” years, I worked for a company that erected concert stages. We could hang out backstage while the show was on. Chick was way down on the list of bands and I wasn’t even sure who he was. I learned a lot that day.
