    Default Where in the world?

I don't usually recommend time-wasting online games, but this is a fantastic little game for the geographically inclined. I've seen a lot of places that look like great roads to ride too.

    Great job!

I once had one where it put me down right next to what was obviously the Golden Gate bridge, so I was dead nuts on. Those aren't quite as satisfying as the ones where you think "that has to be some place like Australia" (even though you've never been there in person) so you take a WAG and end up only 500 miles away.

My best so far. Strangely my worst try was my only guess in the US.

My best yet. Got lucky with some very wild guesses.

IMO it isn't fair to just "drive" down the road until you see a town sign then Google that to figure out where you are. I think to play fair you can only spin around a bit, go maybe a few car lengths in each direction, and nothing more. Otherwise, it's just a question of who has more time or patience to keep looking for obvious landmarks.

Agree. It's more about recognizing landscapes, identifying vegetation and landforms, or architecture if you're in a town. Also light/clouds give clues to the climate and how far from the equator you are if the vegetation isn't offering much.

I love this game. There was a thread on this a couple of years ago. Now, I wont' get any work done tomorrow.

Blow up and pin a picture of M. Bartoli on your wall. When you achieve that position, stop. Until then, stretch, ride, stretch, ride, eat less, and ride more.

It's gotten more off-the-beaten track than it was a few months ago. I just found myself on a mountaintop on what turned out to be an island in the PNW and now find myself on the snow outside the base lodge at a Scandinavian ski resort. No road in sight in either location.

I didn't know this was possible. I always thought that the images were from Google Street View.

yeah, Google is starting to gather "street view" data from other spaces like ski slopes, parks, landmarks, etc. Even the insides of buildings, esp. here in San Francisco. It's all accessible through the street view function.

Is it crowd sourced or the like?

I don't think it is... but I'm not sure. The crowd sourced pics are usually directional; this is mostly full 360 view. But I'm just speculating.
