I tried to search for a previous thread but couldn't find anything. Mine bit the dust. Small potatoes, I know but they are all over the map in price. Looking for suggestions.

How much space do you want them to take?
How loud do you need them?
Is low frequency output worth the size of having a subwoofer?


Lastly, are you handy? There are a lot of DIY options out there from places like Parts-Express that could be a fun weekend project. I could help you pick out a nice little 2 channel system from the PE website with amplifier.

I plug my computer to the home hi-fi. An arcam miniblink bluetooth dac is handy to send the sound wirelessly.

I have these, they are great for what they are. But, I do the same as Thomas. The klipsch aren't even in the same realm as a 'real' speaker.

I have a pair of M-Audio ProStudio 3's. They are okay, but honestly I think I need a pre-amp between them and the computer to clean up and even out things. Something like this - Schiit Audio, Headphone amps and DACs made in USA.

Otherwise, the Bose Companion computer speakers work well. My wife uses a pair hooked up to a Bluetooth audio input so the speakers are not on her desk. In typical Bose fashion, the sound is bigger than the speakers. They are not hifi clear and crisp, but they sound nice and fill the room easily.

The Audioengine speakers are well regarded for computer use. The powered A5+ or the smaller A2+.

No, the StudioPro 3s are amplified monitors. Adding a pre in front will totally mess up your gain staging and add a lot of distortion, especially if you already have a headphone-out or other amplified source feeding it. I'd recommend a better audio interface with balanced outs. Also recognize that things labeled "monitor" are generally designed for neutral playback, rather than the hyped response most people prefer. This isn't to say you can't get amazing sound from monitors...you just need an amazing source. M-Audio is generally considered consumer-line, so YMMV.

I'm a project superintendent on a construction site and just want to listen to tunes when I'm pushing paper a few time a day. That said, when I do listen I want some type of quality. Think Ultegra.

You want an Airplay connector. There are many of them out there.

Airplay is an Apple protocol designed exactly for what you're describing. The connector will allow you to wirelessly feed audio and more to your stereo. There are headphones, receivers, and speakers -- for instance, Teenage Engineering's OD-11 -- that handle it natively. Of course, there are other options, as well, including the Sonos products.
