    Default Victor Torch Question

I’m currently using a Victor 100FC torch. While I’ve been happy with it, I wanted to try the Victor J-28 torch, which is the lighter “aircraft style” torch. I was curious if anyone here is using the J-28 torch, and would let me know how you like it. In addition, it looks like the J-28 has built in check valves, but does not have flashback arrestors. As such, I was thinking of also using torch-mount flashback arrestors.

    Thanks for your input.

Like Eric said and I took his lead when he recommended the J-28 when I asked his opinion on a smaller, lighter torch. Very capable, it's light in my hand and gets the job done.

Nice recent discussion of torch handles and tips you may have seen already: http://www.velocipedesalon.com/forum...ane-30480.html
The Ameriflame handle is a good buy, works well for me, but is backordered at Amazon for $35 and free shipping: Ameriflame MD71TH 6-Inch Light Duty Welding Handle for General Purpose Heating, Brazing, Welding and Other Flame Processes - Amazon.com

Thanks for the input. I'll be going to my local AirGas this week to purchase the J-28.

It isn't likely you will be sorry you bought the lighter J-28 torch. As already mentioned, I gave a review of various torch handles in the subject thread acetylene vs. propane. The check valves on my J-28 are the small "A" size and screw on the end of the handle. I would suggest putting the larger "B" size flashback arrestors someplace else in the line so their weight doesn't interfere with your torch movement. Their purpose is to keep a fire from reaching the tanks so they don't blow up so it isn't necessary they are right by the handle. While you are on your lightness kick you might also want to consider lighter hoses like those from TM Technologies or the Smith Kevlar ones. The TM ones are more robust but slightly heavier. The difference between those and standard rubber hoses is not only weight but also resistance to movement.

Some other points. An experienced brazer can use almost any torch handle, big or small, light or heavy effectively. I encourage students to bring their own torch handles to my framebuilding classes and none of them want to use their heavier units once they have tried my lighter ones. Beginners just do better with lighter equipment. Victor tips for propane work better than other companies' because they are recessed. That is a good reason to buy Victor (or clone) equipment if one wants to go the cheaper more convenient propane route.
