Default Any closet Nascar fans here? (Daytona)

Just curious how many of you will turn on the tube this afternoon to watch the crashfest that is the Daytona 500.
Me? After the Kuurne -finish and a few hours on the mountainbike I'll watch the last hours.
Cheap beers ;racing and good company, never turn it down..

My uncle owns a racetrack and my cousin is in the Busch series. Went to my first race probably in the late 80's. Racing sure has changed, a little different crowd than before, to say the least... I don't like any restrictor plate races, so I'm going out riding.

    Is Floyd Landis driving :-)

All kidding aside, one of our own is probably there working the race.

I will watch in secret, too. curious as to who will crash Danica and make her spaz out so I better start early

the TV does not do the rumble of a V8 driven in anger any justice, in person is quite a different experience

P.S. Nascar has gotta be better than the abomination that is the stepped nose this year in Formula-1...

    +1

F1 is getting to be like the real housewies of new jersey or something. Bernie E. is starting to remind me of Aaron Spelling or something

I'm not a closet fan, I am a fan. I grew up around tracks. Harry Gant raced Late Models and Grand Nationals(now nationwide series) for my Uncle. Times have changed. When I was a kid the races weren't on TV. My dad and I would drive an hour north so we could get whatever race on the radio. A southern drawl and flag was the norm and only a few races were not in the deep south.

saw that, he is 81 though. definitely a case of the last man standing among his peers, wonder what happens in a few more years when health wheels fall off for him?

I watached a lot of nascar in the 70's too, when i was a kid. Made a lot of plastic car models too (not sure what happened to them all?)
My race watching days have been up and down over the years, i haven't followed nascar in a fews season now. I've seen every F1 race
since about '87 or so, but my patience there is wearing mighty thin these days. I've stayed up all night to watch Le Mans a couple of times.

Sometime around 78-80 I was spending the weekend with my Aunt and Uncle in the infield at the Daytona 500. One afternoon Harry Gant and Darrell Waltrip Waltrip walk in my Uncle's Winnebago and asked my Aunt to make them a BLT. They were chatting with my Uncle and this part is kinda fuzzy but I remember Harry saying that NASCAR was getting some of the drivers speaking coaches because the sport was gonna be big and they needed to appeal outside of the deep south. Ive seen it come a long way.

The stepped nose (we call it a pltypus nose) was introduced to prevent certain types of collision ending in very nast ways it was part of the FIA rules this year all cars must fit into a certain dimensional package The mclaren was already low enough not to need the restyle (hatchet job)

I always wanted to work in NASCAR unfortunately being english I ended up in american le mans doing the ARX's highcroft /de farran (proper cars) or F1 (temperamental cars) could never get my head round INDY car though they remind me of penelope pitstop cars

Yeah I get that it's safer for side impacts being lower - still ugly as hell...

A kid in my grade school was really into it and Dick Trickle is from Wisconsin so there was some exposure growing up there. And I remember the fight between Cale Yarborough and Bobby Allison.

Not really a fan but the Daytona race is kinda cool. Seems like it should be the last race of the year though instead of the first race.

Some of my friends here out in Virginia have been to a few NASCAR races and the report is that there's a lot of 'talent' present, a lot of beer consumed and the race is definitely just an excuse for a giant party.

I was stationed in Charleston, SC from 92 to 96. Bike race weekends were typically road race on saturday followed by a crit on sunday morning. I would drive back to the coast on sunday afternoon and listen to the race on MRN. I have been a fan ever since. I was a Dale Earnhardt fan and after his death, I started following Dale Jr. My crit bike had a "3" on the fork. Carl Edwards is a cyclist and he's known for riding to some races in the Nationwide series.

Never been in the closet.... Have been a fan for many years and have attended many races.... NASCAR got the formula for racing right.... Hopefully F1 will figure it out someday too (love F1)....

I grew up going to " The Glen " and watching F1 till they packed there bags and left us around 1980. I have never seen a single NASCAR race there even though I live less than a twenty minute drive from the track. Not against it, just not the interest that I used to have in F1.

Drove and worked for years with SCCA and in the Firestone Firehawk series (a couple of spot drives for a freind's team).

I am a motorsports fan of almost all 4 wheel types.

I have really lost interest in F1. The rest is still fun.
