    .

In case you missed this the first time around atmo...

He and I share a love for the dailiness of exercising a craft, him with the torch, me with sentences. He once sent me an interview with Thomas Keller, the chef behind what is arguably the greatest restaurant in the U.S., the French Laundry. In it, Keller talked about craft and how a certain understanding comes once you’ve scrambled a few thousand eggs.

Good read Richard - thanks for sharing. Looking forward to Part II.

This is how you answer a question:

From Tim Isaac, back when I worked for him: "Brazing a lug is like cooking an egg: once it's done, more heat isn't going to make it more better."

If anyone's interested, I highly recommend reading The Soul of a Chef by Michael Ruhlman - a third of the book is dedicated to Thomas Keller's pursuits. He's an insightful man.

I like Keller's career as a parallel to frame building for a couple of reasons. Not because he's doing well financially (assumption) and rather high profile. The reasons are that Keller came up through the industry not some cooking school. And that his food is honest, good food. Not tricks, bells, whistles, foams or gels. Just good ingredients made with care.

Why do people feel the need to list all of their bikes in their signature?

I've been meaning to start a new thread in the handmade forum mentioning Michael's book "Wooden Boats" but now is as good a time as any.

    .

    Well, anyway...
Here's the rest of the story.

To quote myself paraphrasing a quote from the sculptor Louis Bourgeois about whom I read an
article in an in-flight magazine some twenty years ago, “I continue to work in order to redeem
myself for all my past mistakes.” Or some shit like that….

This nails it, thanks - I also use CAD pretty heavily (Coffee Aided Design)
By the time a new bike is up & it's predecessor off to paint I've done all the design work in my head, doing it all on just a computer program stymies me, not that it's what others do just fine.
    - Garro

The interaction I have with a client always includes a dialogue as well as a completed order form containing the conventional anatomical measurements and the contact points assimilated on the bicycle or bicycles used. I usually give all of this (that is, the information I have at hand) about 30 quick seconds before an image is conceived for the design which will become the client’s frame. No formulas. No stationary bicycles. No don’t touch me there stuff. I’d say it’s all intuitive. Some cats see dead people. I see riders on bicycles. It’s just that simple. PS: This all occurs in person less than 10 times per year and has never been any other way. Since my first week in the trade, nearly all of my orders were filled for clients who were anything but local to me.

    Ben,
Would like to discuss the Ridgewood BBQ Sauce recipe you posted. Could you send me a private message?

but my name, Dan, was used backwards in high school...Nad, does this give me an advantage too??? It just doesn't feel that way, but then again, perhaps I just didn't see it. now 25 years later, perhaps it is

BTW: my first post, and have been reading, re reading, and re re reading and I have so much pinned up passion inside to build a frame. I will gift my first to my best friend, but also balanced with the realities of knowing my expectations...this will be difficult to pull off

thanks to you all whom I can glean from
