Is that an e-mini? Because it looks like they are following the apparently global playbook for electrifying vehicles, which is a) abandon the design language people like in your ICE vehicles, b) make it look a lot heavier, and c) go to town on the tail lights for some reason.

Looks like a Kia/Land Rover Defender mashup.

Any thoughts on the Rivian R3x? I dig it- reminds me of my old Golf.
I hope Rivian sticks around and this makes it into production. We need more hatchbacks these days.

The 2025 is a gas car up to the S trim and then the SE is electric. https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2...-drive-review/

Currently they still have in-stock a 2023 version that looks slightly more brand-correct and is a plug-in hybrid. Best feature is outlets on both sides of the car. https://www.thedrive.com/car-reviews...ost-out-of-gas

Rivian just "paused" their new factory in Georgia. https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/...ruck-107900453

I think you have the Land Rover mashup right. It even has a gratuitous box behind the passenger door window.

Kia's reliability issues aside, one could do a lot worse than an EV6.

Whereas Subaru is desperately trying to turn its wagon into an SUV, the EV6 looks more like an SUV/CUV pretending to be a wagon. At ~185 cm long, it's certainly longer than most hatchbacks and is on par with BMW 3-series wagon.

That Rivian look like what a modern, electified Yugo would be.

I read somewhere 10 years ago that nobody would buy an electric car that look too much like a petrol car. Hence why BMW started having a completely different design language with the i3 / i8. But that was 10 years ago, when driving an electric car was something out of the norm so you wanted to show it off to everyone. I am not sure how that translate's to 2024 buyers.

My 2013 Golf has a screen for the navigation and what I hate about it is the reflectivity. A shiny dash can blind the driver.

Saw this yesterday and stopped to take a photo.

I hope Rivian survives and yes, we definitely need more hatches these days. I have no opinion on this concept, but I generally like Rivian a lot.

Yeah, it does look like a Yugo. I hope it’ll be a better vehicle. Of that I have little doubt if they survive long enough to make this. Amazon is their secret benefactor and I hope they stick around.

Their CEO seems pretty smart and cool and not a megalomaniac. So far.

I wonder if Rivian has a penalty clause in their development package, as Georgia had spent $200M in land acquisition and infrastructure improvements prior to the plant construction halt.

I like the Rivian R3 and want one pretty bad. They also announced their smaller SUV the R2 which looks nice but I have no use for it. This smaller car looks perfect. I like that it reminds me of my old Rabbit. Something really cool is going to have to come out before it for us not to get one.

I think they are designed using the Lego Builder app.

The Lemon Pledge earworm has wrecked my morning.

My neighbor is on the very short list for the truck. Didn't PT Barnum have some appropriate words for this sort of pitch?

FWIIW The other day I was inside my coffeeshop haunt when a well dressed gentleman pulls up. His "whip" is a shiny new Rivian with, get this, a double bicycle rack on the back and a rooftop tent (or someting equally weird).

It was all I could do to squelch uncontrollable giggles.

    I'm out.

There’s photo somewhere on the interwebs of a giant pickup with a roof tent and external gas tanks and body plates and snorkels and ladder jacks and giant tires and clearance high enough to drive over a Miata - parked at a motel.

You guys pick on EVs and that’s OK. I’ll keep on enjoying my $40-$45/month electric costs. Not pussyfooting around or low mileage driving. I have 23,000+ miles since early December 2022.

Meanwhile, I only visit the gas station for cartons of cigarettes, lottery tickets and live bait.

BTW, still on the fence about a Cayman. I want one but don’t want more stuff or the financial liability of insurance, gas, maintenance, etc. We’ll see but I might like my simplicity right now.

I think one can criticize the design language of some companies without picking up on EV's in general.

Definitely. And I think my Model Y is a bit of an ugly duckling to be honest. It looks OK from some angles and not from others. The Mini in question is not a gem to my eyes.

We just tease about the ugly ones ;) I love the idea and the use case is a non-starter for us so hey.

Am I wrong that BMW has gone the other direction with EVs? All their new model gas AND electric cars look the same but they can be ordered gas or hybrid or EV?

FWIIW The Tesla truck is not only fugly it is a huuuge attractive nuisance. Maybe I'm saying it is a bad look in many many places you might drive it??? For instance, I'd think twice about owning a Nissan pickup truck if I were living in Rock Springs, Wy. #readtheroom

Nay, sir, I was only picking on ICE brands that go electric by mimicking car designs from Robocop.

Simplicity is good. A Cayman also seems to be good. I wish you luck on that fence.
