    Default Full Windows 10 Update

I upgraded tonight...I went all in and when MS said ready, set, Go! I updated.

Just to be true...I am an ex-IBMer. I trained on early MS products. Microsoft and I speak.
Looking to see if this version is better than 7, which I liked.

Waiting for Apple to pile on...and I own Apple!

This post is from MS10, VSalon.

    Well. Backup.

Schedule the upgrade too while I was sleeping on my only windows computer. So far so good, minor stupidities like defaulting back to us keymap at the login prompt while I would expect it to keep using the keymap I was using prior to the update.

I only played with it for 5 minutes before going to work this morning. Overall it look like what Windows 8 should have been. I welcome the late apparition of virtual desktops which I have been using for 20 years on unix and linux systems.

I've been planning to do the upgrade, but recently realized this.

I think that it's possible to disable enough of the sharing/spying that I'll be comfortable with it. But, it is something to think about for sure.

Not different than what is done when you are using your smartphone.

Or when you forget to log out of google/gmail/yahoo/live/facebook/twitter/instagram/whatever and keep using your browser.

I not only noticed that, but also noticed that this is the prevailing OS business model. Windows is chasing IOS and Android here.

    Welcome to now.

well, I became a linux user the day that Steve Ballmer said in a speech that his customers were ripping him off. It works really well. I like Win7, and I'm stuck with Windows at work, but I'm not going to allow the OS on a machine that I own and make money with to be an advertising engine. Computers and network connections still aren't fast enough for that and it's a security hole a mile wide

I installed Win10 into a Parallels virtual machine on a Macbook Pro. Nobody tells you that you need at least 2 GB of RAM available to the virtual machine if you're loading 64 bit until you get to the very end and it stops. Stupid documentation from Parallels as well as Windows and Apple. But once that was fixed, it was a flawless install. Parallels has a fairly lengthy and badly written document covering how to do it -- and of course don't make it easy to find. No problems so far with MS Project, Quickbooks, MathCAD, etc. Be sure you have the very newest update of Parallels.

I had finally gotten used to Win8.1, mostly by deactivating newer features whenever I could find them. The problem with that software was mostly in figuring out where to go -- I don't care if it was touch-oriented, but it was illogical for any user with any installation. The new one is pretty simple, logical, makes sense to either a traditional Windows or a OS X user, and has been bug free so far. There were some early install problems on Mac but I think they were due to the 2 GB memory requirement and to server crashes at MSFT.

Of course I had both a Time Machine backup and a full independent disc image before I started screwing around with it.

less successful here. system analysis told me that my machine was compatible, but none of the network hardware was working. Checking the Atheros website, and none are listed as win10 compatible. Which ironically, was the most common issue that I had with Ubuntu (and I'd still do Linux again).

Anyway, at least I got to test the roll-back procedure.

I think it speaks to the use of computers when they're able to embed adverts right into the operating system...shows that computers are now toys or entertainment devices rather than tools for doing work.

As a bit of a geek I've struggled for decades using linux...it was always difficult to install, didn't work with that specific graphics card etc etc but the last few years of Ubuntu have been amazing: Just install and it works. Hey presto!

Linux can be scary and there are a million different 'variants' which makes things even more confusing for the newperson but if you like Windows 7 try Linux Mint. It uses a traditional 'start' button, taskbar, and menu structure. It will make your computer run 10x faster than it currently does. It's free. It's secure.

The sophistication of the targeting advertising/clearing sites etc that basically sell access to you as you are clicking into sites realtime is the mindboggling. They are also getting better at targeting you.

I've thought about (but never got around to) starting a thread on Linux for the small and one-man business which use this forum. 99% of what is needed to run a small business can be done on cheap hardware with a free operating system which is easy to use, fully functional, safe, secure, and responsive.

We've got 4 computers at work - three are tiny Intel NUCs running linux. One is a big-ass Dell with Windows 7 because our cnc vinyl cutter has windows-only drivers. These NUCs are cheap, mega fast, low-power, quiet, and work really well.

The best part of Linux as an operating system is that it stays out of your way...never any popups to update software (that's all done behind the scenes) just a responsive computer which allows you to do work. That's what work computers are all about, right?

The NUC is the little silver thing on the right :-)

What are the specs on the NUC for comparison and how would you equate the performance to a Windows PC? I am sick and tired of the quagmire that is Windows and I'm being an absolute dog in the manger about going to crApple. I'm seriously thinking of trying Linux out.
