    Default dedicated slotting setups?

anyone care to share some pics of their dedicated stay slotting setups? I've seen some pics of what the guys at FF are using but more pics of that would be useful. Getting bored of constantly swapping stuff out on my horizontal milling machine so thinking about a dedicated setup.

I have a vague memory of someone adapting a cutter grinder but don't recall who it was.

    Cheers

How many stays or sets of stays are you doing at a time?

Well - you know me atmo. I'd get the hacksaw, a warding file, and 15 minutes, and show those part who's boss. Be dedicated!

I just found 2 Nichol's horizontal mills to do mitering and slotting, maybe this was what you had in mind:

The holders are modifications of Henry James jig pieces,
I was inspired at a welding class with Carl at Metal Guru « Lessons in bicycle manufacturing
He started as a machinist and morphed into bicycles. I had been hand slotting with small portable bandsaw attached to a Swag Offroad stand after bending them.
I think it may be easier to hold in a fixture if I slot first, then bend. Not sure of the names of horizontal milling machines available to you, but you get the picture:)

I'm not going to name names but i saw a cut-off wheel/die grinder sorta nailed to a board/guide once in a veteran framebuilder's shop. for repetitive slotting.

We didn't discuss it, but i'd guess he whacked it real close with that and finished with a file. mebbe.

my point is that the Red Green approach can get stuff done. (i'm headed out for more duct tape -and a board yo)

A little Barker mill would do a nice job in not a lot of space. .

I am going out on a limb that Steven knows how to hand slot these and knows just how long it takes him. He is asking a question relative to small batch produced work.

Steven- get in touch with Andy from Strawberry and Brent Steelman. Both have slick fairly easy slotting set ups. A small mill with auto feeds, an auto shut off and a simple fixture can go a long way.
