I took Tuesday off to pack a UHaul trailer full of furniture, clothes, and sundries for a young couple heading south for their next chapter, their first together.

    packed.jpg

After completing that jigsaw puzzle we had a celebratory/valedictory family dinner, picked up some sandwiches and drinks, and called it a night. Wednesday I was up at 4:15 to see off my daughter (and my wife, the driver.)

This departure feels different than seeing her off for her gap year in Israel, or each of the four years she was off to college in Northampton or Amman. A friend nailed the reason - this time it's not a time-limited departure. She is off and running.

I'm sad because something's ended. I'm bursting with pride because she's primed for life.

This weekend people are going to be blowing stuff up all over my town. The other morning at 4:30am somebody in my neighborhood got an early start and let off two big ones. I know they were fireworks because I could hear the thump.... before the bang. My only objection was that I hadn't taken my cup of coffee out on the porch so I could see which of my neighbors has that kind of excellent style.

I could have sworn I'd have to stop riding for a bit once the baby was born. Instead I've ridden roughly 750 miles and over 40 hours and I'm only down a little from my pre-baby distance. Getting up extra early to feed him is turning out to be a great way to squeeze in some riding. Eff yeah babies and bikes!

Oh, and my son is doing great and I'm getting the hang of this and I'm loving every minute of it.

Oh, and my bro- and sis-in-law just had #2 this morning so my son will have a cousin that's just 3 weeks younger who lives half a mile away. They're some of our best friends and we see them all the time so it's going to be awesome.

And the cherry on top is that I'm probably going out for sushi tonight which will scratch an itch I've had all week. Eff yeah, Friday!

Im taking the kids later to a local tubing run. This is good on a scorcher day. My bro is bringing my niece tomorrow from SC. That's good. We will ride in the dirt. That's good too. I may even make a key lime pie. That's th best.

Made a quick visit to Zanconato world (domination) headquarters yesterday to pick up the cx frame. Built it last night and rode it this morning with the #dawnpatrol knuckleheads. It's ready to go to Nantucket for the week.

Talked to the youngster last night, and she sounded really happy. Boyfriend was making pasta carbonara (because the DC weather calls for hot cheesy noodles) while she filled me in on the job and urban explorations.

Oh, and she starts coxing on the Potomac next Tuesday at dawn.

Sounds like you and your better-half have done a greg job! Kick back and have a cold one for a job well done!

    My Friday:
Today is the first day since May 1st that my knee isn’t causing pain. Have not been on the bike since then. Injured it by running.

I’m riding tomorrow, even if it’s just around the block.

I've been telling my kids that the way to approach a problem or difficult situation is to ask yourself if you're going to be a thermometer or a thermostat? Do you want to react to the problem or control it? I've been trying that as a parent too. With that said....it's Friday and it's time to do some thermostat fu and kick the weekend off right. I hope you guys make it a good one and you and yours are happy and healthy.

The technical problem is getting attention, users are being reasonably patient, and my diagnosis appears to have been correct. With a little luck and some hard work we should be back on track soon.

    Feeling like a thermostat here.

Haven't raced in three years. Just before health forced me to stop I won the Cat. 2 Delaware State Championship the last two years I was racing, primed to move up to Cat.1 Pro/Elite.

Today I go pre-ride the course with my team.

Tomorrow I race Cat 2 at the Granogue XC race.

    Fuck Yeah!!

Wife dragged me out of bed at 5:00am so we could start going to the gym together (translation: so we start actually using our gym membership). I enjoyed it far more than expected and feel quite invigorated although I am a bit sore. On the walk home she asked if I would look for a used touring frameset for her. Yippee, authorized n+1 shopping in my near future.

I just looked up my car on the VW Diesel Settlement webpage. It looks like that I can either get $25K for my car (buy back) or they will fix the car and give me $7K.

I think that I will opt for the buyback and get a new car. If I now add up all of the cash incentives that VW has provided to me, $1K loyalty, another $2.5K when we bought a new GTI, the TDI net cost will be $500 for almost 4 years.

It sucks that VW did this, but the owners appear to be well compensated. My son, who has the TDI will be excited for a new car.

Lots of reasons for humming and whistling today:

-the “Help Dustin’s boy Corgan hear!” thread

-It’s a long weekend and I’ve got three days of camping and fishing ahead. And I’m leaving at lunch.

-My youngest daughter sent us a portrait. Because of Canadian Forces training we haven’t seen her much this summer. She had a weekend at home between exams and having to report back, but she spent most of that packing, repacking and obsessing about her kit. I have little interest in guns or military culture but this photo makes me giggly happy.
