Vsalon Fromage De Tête
I don't get this. What if you ran a standard double with a 39/21 as your lowest gear and got used to that gearing, and then go to Vermont where the hills are way longer or d2r2 where the hills are way steeper? You're still screwed!
[edit: ...unless you meant that when you got to Vermont you'd switch to a compact?]
Wow, I'm so impressed with how macho everybody around here is.
Just ride your bike the way you way you do and let others do the same. The beauty of the bike is it serves different purposes for different people. The "slow and fat" dude riding his bike has his purpose. He is less likely to run you over you in his vehicle when he's not.

I'm not comfortable
I think the underlying theme I and several others have been trying to make is that if you don't put yourself in the hurt locker you will not improve/maintain your game. It can be mentally tough to go out and ride into that spot that you know you are not going to like. I know if I don't do this on a regular basis I will get slower. I will not be able to gorge myself like E-richie and my 30" waist will expand into Jitah's unacceptable range.
I still say folks are confusing 'comfort' with 'efficiency'. Lower gears don't make you more comfortable, per se, but they do allow greater efficiency (on steep and/or long hills I mean), which leads to a better cycling experience.

I was 6'3'', 166 pounds in college and raced uphills. A decade and 25 pounds later, I get laid a lot more.
I'm not a pro, and I've got a few extra minutes to get to the top.
And I've never dated a girl who cared about my vo2max or power output. (Well- yeah- but less numbers and more of a demonstration).
And anyone who thinks they're a 32" waist because that's what the label on their jeans reads needs to visit a tailor and have their heart broken.
You guys are so 'core. Started off well, but now his thread kinda makes me sick.
Got some cash
Bought some wheels
Took it out

But we're alright
My ah-ha moment came many years ago as I cruised along, "exercising" on my hybrid. This thought passed through my head: "If you're not getting stronger, you're getting weaker."
Thus began my effort to switch from riding my bike to cycling. These days the effort waxes and wanes, but it's always in my head when I'm on my bike. Call it an attempt to slow the aging process, or to keep myself healthy and strong, or even an attempt to ride the wheels off the guy next to me.
My discomfort on the bike makes me more comfortable, both on & off the bike. And then I do it again.
GO!
.....
i can't believe how many new framebuilders there are atmo.
are there enough customers?
Didn't swoop say 'ride beautifully'...in that is room for contemplation and hard work.
