agreed about corporal punishment -- if any kind of punishment is going to work, just telling the kid they are doing something wrong is a very good start. And if they screw up, there are always some fairly obvious consequences that will work. But this probably isn't the place to go on about child rearing. When my kids are 80, I'll tell everyone my secrets.
The "culture" thing is something that I realized a decade ago when I heard someone say something about "culture" on a radio program and they were self aware enough to realize that it was deeply racist right after they said it. I felt sorry for the person involved, they were obviously disturbed about what they said. Child abuse, spousal abuse, alcoholism, and a lot of other things are highly likely if a person has grown up with them. I hate to write someone off because of something like this. Then again, blowing up someone's career is a good way to get some attention to the problem.

It will be interesting to see how NASCAR handles Tony Stewarts race investigation being sent to the Grand Jury in New York. NASCAR, being a closely held family business hasn't always noticed which way the wind was blowing before they act or don't act.
Meanwhile, Hope Solo represents the US at the Women's World Cup. The accusations that were made involved a child, so it's no joke. Let's see how this develops. It's getting a fair amount of talk on ESPN and none of it is making light of the situation. Real questions are being about why the United States Soccer Federation has not addressed this. It will be interesting to see where this goes.
