Penn State had a case of measles a couple of weeks ago, kid went to the health center. 2 weeks later, the health department comes in guns blazing, puts everyone that can't prove they have a measles shot on quarantine. Wife spent _hours_ looking for her shot record without success. Primary care doc no help. Well, turns out she's not in the affected population, but a couple of other people we know are. Health department finally agreed to take blood and test it, but who knows when the results will come back. Meantime, people are sitting at home. Good news is, you only are contagious for 20 days, they wasted over 2 weeks, so either way the quarantine is only good for another couple of days. If there was an actual emergency, we would be doomed. Penn State didn't exactly cover themselves with glory on this one, hopefully they have a plan for the future, the anti-vaxxers have really screwed a lot of people with this.

I suggest everyone figure out how to prove they are immune to MMR, or get a booster.

E-bikes are becoming more and more popular around here, and lately I don’t seem to go more than 2-3 days without seeing one on the W&OD (typically while walking my dog*) acting like a complete moron. Passing two pedestrians abreast with a bike coming the other way, passing an old person walking way too close, etc. And most of these riders do not look like they have the capacity or reflexes to handle any minor deviation from their intended path; ie: that old person stops to tie a shoe, or the gap between pedestrians and other bikes ends up being smaller than they calculated.

    Pathletes cubed.

    * And before you say I’m part of the problem, I walk my dog in the grass along the trail, and use the gravel side paths as much as they run.

I've been getting a bunch of flats lately. It's hot and trailers are having blowouts leaving chunks of tires and steel belts all over the road shoulders. Little pieces of wire from the steel belt will punch right through a tire. Almost all the roads normally ridden have been resurfaced in the last year in a darker material so you can't see the wires until they're in your tire. The past summers I have ridden Schwalbe Ones and Pro4's with pretty good success. Over the winter I bought some Conti GP4K tires and they don't seem to do near as well with the wire flats. I'm going to run them out and never again.

I've had nails in 4 different car tires in the last month, highlight was a right rear blowout on the freeway.

We got 3" in an hour on my job site. Don't ask what that does to a construction site.

Same for a basement. My dehumidifier is running full blast for the foreseeable future.

I know it is early but this has been a rough week. Apparently my basement needs a new sump pit to be able to be to the city's code, the flooding killed my clothes dryer, and my furnace has a crack that leaks carbon monoxide that was discovered as they were checking for damage from the flood. I am glad it got discovered before we had to turn it on, but still this is turning into a very expensive week.

    The joys of home ownership...

I hear you. Home ownership sucks. In the last couple weeks I've had to cut down a 70 year old oak tree, repair a roof, and replace a broken segment of our sprinkler system (requiring us to remove a section of our privacy hedge). We still need to repair the ceiling under the roof leak and replace a bunch of our dead grass with sod (thanks broken sprinklers).

And on a more personal note, I'm an idiot and sliced my finger last night requiring a couple sutures and a tetanus shot. Not how I've planned for my week to go.

Hopefully you and I are getting rid of our bad luck all in go and we won't have to post in here for a while.

    Sorry to hear that.

Make sure whoever you see is Lyme Literate. Most MD's are not (although there are more every day). Remember, test gives approx 60% false negative, & many times won't ever test positive in the first 2 weeks, so push MD for AB's for at least 30 days no matter what the test says. It's much easier to control the bacterial load early. My wife was mis diagnosed 12 or so years ago and now has a brain & nervous system infection and we are in year 3 of treatment...don't know if she will ever recover fully.

Best sourse for most current info that's "balanced" is ILADS - End Lyme disease epidemic through education, awareness & physican training.

    Good Luck

    Len

The woman from whom I bought my house left a bunch of crap she didn't want to move or dispose of sitting around. Lawn Boy lawn mower (which I think I can get running, but not without effort) and 2-stroke oil, a gas can with gas in it that is years old, dozens (literally) of cans of paint, the kitchen garbage can was overflowingly full, etc. The house is fundamentally good but this situation was definitely not in the spirit of the purchase agreement but it's not worth going after her either. There's no win there for anyone doing that, but it's really f*****g annoying.

Mostly it's the cans of paint that piss me off. There are dozens of them and they are likely unusable. And the old gasoline. She had a lawn service cut the lawn so I have no idea how old it is or if it's even mixed for the 2-stroke mower, which I'll probably give away.

Recently moved my mother out of her home of 50 years. Dad passed in 09. TONS of paint and chemicals. Mix the latex paint with cat litter 1 to 1 ratio. It will dry and can be thrown away. Find a chemical drop off and they'll help with the rest. I didn't even have to get out of the car, popped the hatch and they did all the work. I didn't want to mess with it but I didn't want the new owner to have to deal with what you are dealing with.

Great reminder not to rat hole that shit away, it will come back to bite you some day. I swear my dad bought a new can of finish every single time he painted or stained something.

Another week of heavy smoke hanging over the valley. Smoke grey is apparently the new thing.

Can't see the mountains, can't see the planes we hear going overhead.

The taste and smell of smoke is in everything. What riding I am doing is on rollers in the basement.

    Sunsets are spectacular though.

^^^ I'm down here in Seattle looking at Canadian smoke. A weird reversal for my family this summer--clear and sunny in Central Oregon, where we usually find fire, and smoky at home.

In Seattle you are also looking at US smoke. There is a fire burning near Mazama, north of Winthrop. I understand it is a big one, but the really big one is the Elephant Hill fire burning in the region from Ashcroft to Clinton over towards Kamloops. It is currently estimated at approx. 120,000 Hectares. In addition, the Hanceville complex up the coast around Bella Bella area is estimated at around 200,000 hectares currently.

Lots of smoke, but there is no wind right now (which is a good thing!) so the smoke is just hanging.

Definitely just hire someone to handle the clean up. You'll never get the time back if you do it yourself and it will just be frustrating. And it will take you 3x as long to do it. They'll show up and be done in less than a day, possibly less than 1/2 day. Whole house clean move in services. Realtors know who they are.
