Dancing Bear: Heat and the pressure applied by weight or clamp has the potential to distort thin material.

Seems unlikely that would happen, just a few few grams of weight/pressure are required to hold a boss in position, if you get the tube hot enough to distort/deform you've already screwed up the tube.

Ya got a part that weigh less than a gram. A center line. A hole holding it in place if it's a bottle boss. A thin wall tube. A heat source. And perhaps some human error. And you're gonna add it to the frame AFTER the triangle is complete, as if it's an afterthought - and do it with much larger ordeal pretty much forcing it to stay in place while you negotiate the temperature cycle? That's fucking nuts atmo.

Braze-ons go on a pipe. And a frame is assembled from pipes that already have braze-ons.

    He's right.
    Dancing Bear that is.
I like him - he speaks when he knows what he's talking about.
Even those orange Pony clamps can leave a mark on thin wall like .4mm
Shit gets funky at over 1200*F

There really is minimal pressure, the cone basically just sits in the boss to keep things square held up mostly by the thread. Worked perfect for me. If you guys are worried about this you might not want to have your Frame Jig cones "applying pressure" to the insides of your thin wall tubes. They might expand...

Different strokes for different folks. No one is saying you guys have to use these things. I mostly posted it up to give people ideas if they are having similar issues. All I know is this was the easiest, fastest set of bosses I've ever done and they came out perfectly straight.

    You wanted to gage interest.
    Really nice machining, BTW.

Garro, I'm just being sassy. One thing I hate about the internet is it's hard to read peoples delivery.
True, True - originally I was, but after I found out no one was interested I decided just to make it for myself. I only posted it up to give some people some ideas at this point! How do you change a thread title!?!

Hard to se in 2D, but this is what heat and pressure will do - cave in. Luckily it was only a $10 mistake since I was doing braze ons before brazing the front triangle.

If the hole doesn't help you keep the part straight, learn how to drill a better hole atmo.

Actually Todd I might get you to make one for me. I braze my bosses into a piece of 38mm SS tube then cut a strip with the bosses in it out of the tube. The strip is then bonded into the composite tube as part of the fifth lamina, with another four laminae after this operation.

A lot of palaver, I know, but when you're dealing with as many different materials as I do things sometimes get a little complicated. Because the diameter of the tube changes between the various operations I might go for the Vee block version.

Exactly. Nice looking work Todd, and I envy your machining skill.

todd, might you be able to make a tool for holding down tube lever bosses in a similar way ?

it.d be good to be able to hold both sides at the same time so it's as accurate as it can be

    thanks

Funny you mentioned that. I modeled this a while ago when I was going to do DT shifters on a bike. I never ended up making it because I changed my mind.
