I'm sitting on two 85s, and had a Studio 85 and a Deluxe 85 previously. For native/no-pedal distortion for a lot of the stuff I like to play, they rock. I'm not good enough to give a shit about touch sensitivity or bluesy tones out of a tube amp; I just want to play Husker Du riffs and let calgon take me away.

you can get a total blackface bassman clone sound out of a Fender 85. Distortion not so tubey, but you can nail the clean sounds.

You want that Husker Du sound? Get an MXR distortion+

PAF style humbuckers + MXR

all of the SST stuff was Mould running his Ibanez Flying V into the MXR, then straight into the board. No amp.

I play mostly clean, back in the day I had a JC 120. Reverb and delay do it for me.The JC 120 was too big. I bought my first 85 around 1990-91. Great clean sounds. I don't see why people need to shit on other people's equipment without knowing what they play. I've been playing for over 30 years and a Marshall or a Boogie won't get the sound I want. Anyways Radiohead uses the Fender red knob amps. Maybe Bob will learn something after all. I also have a TM 30 that I use once in a while, the speaker is too small for anything outside a bedroom.

For the record, I wasn't criticizing your choice in guitar amps; I was simply pointing out that you're in a remarkably small minority. In 39 years of playing electric guitar I'd never once heard someone say they liked Fender solid state amps...until today.

Bob Mould is still releasing good stuff, need to see him live again.

Amp-wise, we've got an an ancient Fender Champ, a beat-ass old Crate, and some 50watt Ross Fame piece of crap that gets loud.

picked one up today and its a bad ass amp

the cleans are a little thin and spanky, but I dig that --its not Fender clean, but its got a definite vibe. on a american vintage '52 tele the best cleans come with the gain at about 11 o'clock and the volume halfway up or higher. its a little dirty with the guitar volume up full, but it cleans up with some body when you back off the guitar volume. those cleans sound pretty cool -- the cleans with the gain turned lower and the amp volume up are, yeah, too thin with single coils. with the PAFs on an Epi Dot, there's almost no bad sound no matter what. this amp loves humbuckers.

I could totally see playing a mid-sized gig with this amp with a tele or strat. punchy, spanky rhythm tones and then kick ass AC/DC style crunch when you bring the guitar volume up.

You could easily build something that will do what that does with a little soldering practice and patience.

Yes, there is no secrets to the circuitry and components. I'm approved by the FCC to build a one 1500 watt transmitter amp each year just by the virtue of having an amateur radio license. If not done right, one of these can foul up communications for blocks (as well as on the air 'round the world), not just the apt next door. Point being, if you have time and patience and access to good components and testing equipment...then dig in. If you has $, just support the boutique men.

Really basic stuff, but then I haven't done it. yet.

Getting back into guitar now. Just bought a St. Louis Crate v3112 offa the 'bay. Used to has a Delta Blues. I'll report here when i get the Crate.

Fender Sidekick15 Reverb is my couch amp...no tubes but a killer tank, hell the reverb is better than any Peavey I've owned.

Speaking of building stuff...Small Bear Electronics has some dandy effects kits.

The need to build is not a need based on there not being other options, but like the need to make music or build a bike, it's because you feel the pull to do it yourself. If the pull isn't there, there's no point in trying to find it because, as you say, there's plenty around.

I don't know what it is, but for me, stuff I build myself has a magic to it that is worth what sometimes ends up being an absurd amount of time and money.

Ha! I use cleanup week and a keen eye for old organs and console stereos. All but the jacks and faceplate of a Marshall 18w clone were born that way.
