The man who killed Jeff was sentenced today. Man sentenced in death of Statesville business owner Jeff Archer | News | statesville.com
I'm thankful that Jeff was probably watching over NAHBS, rather than watching a dreary courtroom in Statesville.
Hopefully his family can have some closure now. It is still difficult for me, I think about him every time my tires touch dirt. Which, fortunately, is often.
Treasure your family, bikes ain't everything.

I have no doubt that my son is going to ask why. I really want to tell him that an idiot made some poor decisions and took our friend from us. But kids are parrots, you know... that might not be the best idea. Not sure what to say. Complicating things, this will be my son's first exposure to *real* death... we haven't lost dogs/cats/goldfish/anything yet with him around. I think he understands it from watching TV and other areas that kids are exposed to, but this is the first time it's going to hit home for him. I am going to miss my friend terribly but I am really dreading that conversation with my son. I realize that it could be worse, but this really sucks. Cherish your family and friends.

I'll get this started and then duck under my blanket so as not to get pelted with snowballs.. It was 38 degrees this morning in Tampa and we had concrete on site at 6:00. Middle of March and probably the coldest all year. God bless you guys up north.

I ordered some new hoops on Feb 2.
Finally got the UPS ship notification last week, scheduled delivery by EOB today.
No change since Monday, but yesterday it occurred to me that there might be a delay due to this week's storm.
Sure enough, I checked status this AM and there it is: "Severe weather conditions have delayed delivery. / We’re working to deliver your package as soon as possible."
No notification or anything like that, I discovered this because I checked. Wheels are presently in Newark, NJ. I'm in MA.
What's the over/under I see these before COB on Friday?
Grumpy because I saw this was coming and I was right.

My face is a little sunburned. I guess I can't bitch too much, I'm riding in a place where I can get sunburned in March.

Getting old sucks. Not that 53 is all that old.
So a couple months ago, while my wife and young daughter were out of town, my right sartorius cramped in the middle of the night. Hard. Shocked me awake and would not stretch out. Took a good 10 minutes of massaging to get it to calm down, and I know there was some muscle damage. It bothered me a little since, but not enough to really call pain.
This past weekend we made the 14-hour (each way, took it in two days) trek to SLC for NAHBS (not a grump). I think all the driving coupled with hours on my feet Saturday set me up for it, but after my ride Sunday morning, something started tightening up. It's somehow connected to that sartorius, but in the low back and pelvic connections. Possibly the psoas.
I haven't been able to sleep well since, and I've been walking around like a stooped old man. If I straighten up too much, let my abs relax, or take too large of a step, twist wrong, or move at all during the night, the psoas and sartorius spasm and it's like knives stabbing me.
Time to see... some one. Maybe a chiropractor, maybe a GP who can refer me to some one else. Sucks.

Neighbors dogs got out of their fence and attacked my wife and black lab while they were running. Knocked Laura down a snowy hillside while biting her. She is fine except for some bruises and one trip to the doctor for antibiotics for a bite. The lab had two bites and is on antibiotics.
The fam is fine all things considered, but if you have two bad dogs lock the gate better.

What's your driving position like?
Are you perfectly centered (unusual) or slightly twisted due to seat position or pedal position or center column or or or or?
I'm amazed by some of the ergo compromises knowingly committed by auto makers...
Good luck.

The ol' bait and switch at work. Intentional or not, that's how it feels. I'm doing stuff at work I didn't interview for and it does not excite me in the slightest.
In cycling terms:
I was hired to do tune ups. Now I'm fitting triathletes on Retul because I know how to move a seatpost.

Amtrak!
They totally jack you on tickets now if you don't buy in advance.
Albany to penn staton $80!
Was $43 on the website last night but I wasn't sure which train I would take so just waited to get to the station.
It's pretty much a commuter route. There should not be such a big penalty on walk up fares.

Back in the Army, the E-4 mafia was taught a simple method to get out of duty, keep effing it up, they'll find someone else. That, and always walk around with a piece of paper, and a clipboard if possible, you look like your productively employed. Try both of these and let me know how they work for you.

Downstairs neighbor paid $375 DC to NYC last minute purchase running to the train on Friday afternoon. They've instituted some sort of surge pricing algorithm like Uber I think. Congress is not their friend so they've had to go mercenary. I can't say I blame them.

Pilates/muscular therapist. No chiropractor. I'd bet you have some sort of positional thing compensating for over-use/weakness somewhere, and stretch and strength work would get you back where you need to be. I say that based on having a similar affliction a number of years ago, and I lucked into a pilates instructor who is also a nurse/PT and has an exceptional knowledge of muscle anatomy. I went from pulling something every time I got out of bed or reached for something to actually being a lot more flexible now than I've ever been really.

Re: Get Your Grump on Thursdays - Was (What's chapping my @ss today?)
My mother's father passed away Sunday evening.
I just dumped $Rocklobst.er into my car.
I forgot my dose of loratadine this morning.
My usual afternoon interval spot is closed until Sunday.

Re: Get Your Grump on Thursdays - Was (What's chapping my @ss today?)
getting old does stink, didn't really start having musculoskeletal issues until 56. All of a sudden I started having sciatic nerve issues showing up as upper thigh twinges. Took me a while to figure that one out. Cycling doesn't automatically keep up your core, which is where all the aging problems occur. Although high intensity cycling workouts do help. Still need to get back to working on my core.

Re: Get Your Grump on Thursdays - Was (What's chapping my @ss today?)
As a fellow 56-year-old, you guys are making me feel better about my aging body. I'm doing regular yoga & stretching and finding it really helpful.
Sorry. Here's the grumps:
- First, it turns out that some Israeli-American Jewish teenager seems to be the one terrorizing Jewish community centers and schools since January. I don't know what motivated him and I don't even begin to care. Fuck this asshole and then fuck him again.
- Second, it was 17 when I woke up this morning. It's late March and the temperature is in the teens? No.
GO!

Re: Get Your Grump on Thursdays - Was (What's chapping my @ss today?)
Multiple grumps:
1. My son's car was hit in the school parking lot last month at 5am while he was on the bus waiting to leave for a track meet. It was a hit and run, but it was someone dropping off a kid to go to the track meet. The track team is small, like 25 people, someone knows who it was but won't say. $2400 in damage but at least the deductible is only $250 because it was parked. The school is offering Crime Stoppers dollars for information.
2. Replaced a UT bearing on my Chorus crankset that has <400 miles. I've never had UT issues other than worn out bearings that were >3 years old and even then I replaced them because they didn't feel absolutely perfect. This one would rattle.
