so it felt kinda weird being in a concert hall with assigned seats, and yes, it is one of those nostalgia tours, but I wasn't going to miss the B-52s who followed OMD, who followed Berlin, at the historic New Orleans Saenger Theater And, yes, it was friggin awesome. OMD in particular really put on a good show.

Pat Benatar and Melissa Etheridge at Tanglewood. I dunno this Neil fellow who's muscling his way into the top billing, but we'll see. Should be a hoot.

Too funny, I am of a certain age that I won’t go to a show if I don’t have an assigned seat.

In past years we've seen Thalia Zedek and The Sheila Devine. Who knows what gems might fall to the stage this year?

And hey, I can carry a folding chair from my basement and hang on the lawn all afternoon!

Marty Stuart And His Fabulous Superlatives at the Egg. Very interesting ticket prices, listed as $40-$50 and I got front row for that. Exactly same seats left side $170. I'm going to be curious to see who sits there...

I saw Marty Stuart when his band backed Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman in the Sweethearts of the Rodeo tour last year. That was really great. I also saw him open for Chris Stapleton at SPAC. I’ve grown to hate SPAC, and I didn’t love the show.

My next up is Los Lobos at Skyloft — something about going to a mall to see a show is disturbing. Then it’s Lucinda Williams at Troy Music Hall the following week. Then Sarah Borges, Dave Alvin, and the North Mississippi Allstars at the Hangar, Skyloft, and Cohoes Music Hall respectively over the coming fall. There are a lot of good small shows coming up this fall. I still am debating Dark Star Orchestra.

    Have fun.

    I'll let you know.

In the meantime send your best wishes to Janet Weiss as she recovers.

    Well, no.

I was lucky to see them twice this week. The shows were a total pleasure. More theatrical for sure, but Carrie's continual joy and expressions of gratitude at being out there on the stage undercut the dread telegraphed by the stark black staging.

The live settings improve the new songs, giving them flesh, sinew and warmth. But the bigger band can overwhelm some of the songs, thickening and even clogging the sound. They're all fine musicians, including the drummer Angie Boylan. It's no insult to say she's no Janet Weiss. Weiss' absence makes it clear just how talented she is, and how integral she was. She could make S-K rage and swing, drive and dance in a single phrase. She is massively talented, arguably one of the best drummers ever.

I felt weird simultaneously dancing my ass off to the current band and mourning the band that was. Check out "Entertain" at 1:05 (or hell, listen to the whole thing!) and see what you think:

Saw Jason Isbell two weeks ago at the Ryman (awweeeeeesome!) and just got tickets to see Sturgill Simpson & Tyler Childers 'Good Look'n' tour in March, and the venue is like 10mins from my parents house which makes the whole baby sitter thing a freakin' breeze! STOKED!!

Saw Jason Isbell around two years ago at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, with John Prine. That covers two of the best singer-songwriters in the last 50 years I think. Isbell and his wife, Amanda Shires, sang some of Prine's songs with Prine and his band. Great show.

I’ve seen Jason many times since he left the Drive-By Truckers. He puts on a great show, and his band is awesome. I’m jealous about the Ryman. I might have to plan a pilgrimage to attend his residency next year. I can live without Amanda’s solo stuff, but she’s great as a backing vocalist. John Prine is a treasure, I last saw him with Margo Price and they both were great.

My last show was Lucinda Williams playing Car Wheels. Great Album and really good show.

My next up is Sarah Borges in Troy, NY on Friday. She was incredible when she opened there for the Bottle Rockets, and she is playing with her own band this time around rather than with the Bottle Rocket’s rhythm section. Then the North Mississippi Allstars the following week.
