    2nd grump for the day.
2nd grump about Boston roads (apologies to DavidS and other Vsaloners in my new 'hood)

    F-CKING Boston Roads SUCK!!!

Almost home from a ride headed over the BU Bridge. That asphalt pothole filler crap all over the place so no way to avoid it. A piece gets stuck between my fork crown and my basically new Schwalbe 1 tire. Left a really deep grove in the tire so it is all but unusable at this point.

    So I ask myself:
    - Why did I move to Boston; were the roads not crappy enough in NJ?
    - Why did I go back to spending money on nice tires to have them ruined in less than 300 miles?
    - Why did I not return this Lynskey Sportive within 30 days (almost 5 years ago when I bought it) when I realized that the claimed 25c with fenders or 28c without using short reach brakes was a myth?
    - Why have I not stopped asking myself stupid questions and instead ordered a custom Ti (Seven, Firefly, IF) built with room for 32c tires now that I am so close to all of these fabulous bike builders?
    - Why do I keep posting in the Thursday grump thread rather than taking action and doing something about it?

That's just age talking, or climate change. I'm more concerned about certain folks who instead of working for a better future seem to breathe air permeated with hope for a better past.

Now that my shoulder has healed, I'm doing the pushups.

I'm pissed that I have to give credit to Nierman every time i use the term "feral kids" from this point forward. What an excellent description, I so wish I could have come up with it on my own.

Here's a picture from her FB page of their family vacation out west earlier this year.

Lovely ride in today--Ballard Locks, Interbay, Myrtle Edwards Park--with requisite Frogger dash across the city to South Lake Union.
I go straight up from the waterfront, jog 5ish blocks to the south, and continue more or less straight to SLU.
2nd avenue has the most dangerous bike lane in the city, but I do my 5-block jog on 2nd because driver hostility is even higher on 1st and 3rd. I take the left lane rather than using the idiotic left-side bike lane.
Cue entitlement-laden BMW laying on the horn behind me when there was plenty of room to pass. "There's a bike lane!"

I did not cuss, but I tried to explain, which was a waste of everyone's time. If you're reading, sir, thanks for seeing and avoiding me, your horn sounds good, have a nice day.

Aaaand the box contained an incompatible 2015 unit despite the fact I clearly ordered the old style.

I think I have an extra 6800 FD. Let me know if you want to check.

~2 years with a non-union (read: permanently broken) clavicle and I still haven't learned to deal.

But I still have full range of motion and can even rock climb if I'm smart about how I do it.

So then I feel even shittier about myself because some people have real problems and/or obstacles and are doing a hell of a lot better than I am.

Leaving a lot out because I don't feel like typing.

I leave town Friday after work to go work some more n

Wife's car won't start. Gets a jump. Dead Saturday morning. Gets a jump.

Goes to Auto Zone - bad alternator. Buys alternator.

Goes to service shop. Gets alternator installed. No warranty since part was purchased elsewhere.

Gets home. A couple hours later the car is dead.

    I get home.

Wrong alternator (incorrect model year... Up to 2006. Wife's car is an 08. Alternators look the same. Pulleys are different and incompatible).

So tomorrow I get to try and return an alternator that was incorrect then find out why an incompatible part was installed at mechanic.

I understand no warranty. But it pisses me off that 1) the wrong alternator was purchased in the first place, and 2) the shop didn't realize the difference, or did but didn't care since "no warranty". It'd be like using DOT5 fluid the customer brought in brakes requiring DOT5.1.

Then we get to try and figure out why the battery isn't holding a charge.

I'm mostly blind without correction. I wear glasses most days, but they are especially terrible for exercising in. I've worn contacts for most of my life and now my eyes are starting to reject them - they're super itchy, move around a lot, and elicit an allergic reaction. Its pretty miserable. Small beans, I know.

First world grump and all but the next four days are training days starting with two days of recurrent ground school and two days of simulators, all taught by people who never fly and have made a great career avoiding flying and 'teaching' people who do fly, how to fly. As they say, those do can, do. Those who can't, teach. Watching TdF coverage trying to get motivated to leave. I'd rather watch the TdF in Hi Def than listen to someone drone on reading out of a book.

For ten plus years, I've been enjoying rides up to and around the northern part of Durham and Orange counties, low trafficked roads, some decent hills, good scenery...but this is still the only place up in those parts for some outdoor bar action.
