It's simple Jorn, you just promise to put down the toilet seat and they will happily shovel all day....

It's the little things that count.

Yes. We know. It gets cold in the winter in New England. Yes. We know. If the wind is blowing, that makes it feel colder.

When did simple weather reporting get so hysterical?
Agree entirely. Here in the greater Philadelphia area, we may get about 3" of snow on Saturday; not unusual for Jan/Feb. There has been hysteria on both the local and national news for days. Jon Stewart had a good phrase for this in his Daily Show days - "the Storm of the Century of the Week."

While it may grab viewers, I think this kind of hysteria is a societal disservice. It gives climate change deniers credibility as it reinforces their claims that 'snowflakes' (pun intended) are wrong and overreact to routine weather. It draws attention away from the more important objective long term trends that are real existential threats to future generations.

I like my old aluminum shovels for the small stuff.

Yesterday I woke up to -10ºF temps in Chicagoland. This cold snap didn't require panic or hysteria. It's just a warmer day in late January than we grew up with in this part of the country.

Yes, new windows have been ordered. The current ones are a joke.......

Snow shovels: snow does not stick to aluminum. Perhaps they were repurposed, but I make a point of buying them at farm tag sales.

AM Leonard makes a nice one. Heavier duty "bucket" on it.

I used to carry a collapsible MSR snow shovel in my car along with a bag of kitty litter in case I ever got stuck. Wondering what I did with that shovel actually.

All through college and well beyond i drove a 2wd pickup and referred to the old shovel and rusty set of rear wheel chains with umpteen repaired links my "traction control system".

pretty impressive what you can get through with a light pickup with chains and a driver without fear, ha.

The tradition continues! When my daughter went off to college, I made sure she had a good set of snow tires and put a set of jumper cables (later updated to a battery pack jump starter) and an aluminum shovel in her trunk. Four years on, she has taught many of her friends how to drive in the snow and put the other items to good use. Oh, and she's become a pretty fearless winter driver (with a healthy respect for the risks of winter driving).

Ironically, the grain shovel makes a better sled than the sleigh shovel.

I'm getting a new wheel bearing and a CV joint in my Forester right now. It's got studded snows and a 5-speed and new front struts and will be the fastest thing on the (dirt) road.

By far the best snow vehicle I ever had was a 1/2 Silverado. It was lifted and had tall skinny tires. A pal helped me cut down some heavy chains for it. With all four chains on it was unstoppable. When I returned from WY a back to back snow storm hit DC. I was out of work and my truck was the only thing moving other than the National Guard and idiots. Between running Docs and Nurses from their homes to the hospital I yanked the idiots out of snowbanks. The best story I'll save for a time when we are not being observed by the internet...it involves a limo stuck in deep snow and full of embassy folks who had just flown into DC from a very hot place. Shaking my head because I still can't believe it happened.
