The older generation will belittle the younger generation for their actions, and the younger generation will roll their eyes at the ways of the older generation. Thus has it always been, and thus shall it ever be.

Whether the epithet is "hipster" or one of its predecessors, "yuppie", "punk", "hippie", "beatnik", "hipster" (again), "flapper", etc., it's always shorthand for "look at the stupid things these stupid young people are doing, and get them off my lawn."

Except not every young person is a hipster.
I may not "get it" but .. so what? I still have my visual tastes.
I don't mind the irony stance... it's the huge beard as fashion "thing" happening everywhere that gets on my nerves.

Top-knot is about the only thing (imho @48) that looks really silly on a grown man.
Skinny jeans and tattoos aren't my thing at all, but hey go for it.

They should do a remake of Rebel without a cause and everybody would have a huge beard.. NOw that would be interesting.

Curiously, i can take the top knot. It's stupid, ugly and everywhere but i can take it.. The huge beards for some reason get on my nerves.

I don't speak for the person you are quoting, but perhaps it does? Maybe this at the core of this issue. At times it is useful to ask ourselves, why does one thing or another bother us. Why does this bother you? Do you enjoy it? Perhaps there is something more interesting to think about than disliking people for doing something that has nothing to do with you.

Fair enough: well, something that means eccentric against the norm, like a huge beard or tatoos suddenly becomes the norm. I am ok w/ that and i like fashion.. I admire what is called the superficiality. I admire the fashion obsessed as much as any bike obsessed guy.. I find it a sign of authenticity and vitality thriving beyond morality.
And it's because i happen to admire fashion that something like a flock of bearded people bothers me.. sometimes on an irrational level. I may get tired of looking at everybody w/ beards and that's as authenthic and vital as the hipster or whatever person that decides to grow a beard cause the look suits his youthfullness.
I believe caring for other's looks is a way of being true to yourself. Not caring for anyone's looks, if it's real, like missing a fashion or visual sensibility.. is ok. NOw.. if it's a moral stance, a moral judgement of other's values.. then it is silly.

The problem with my beard is that every time I shave it the stupid thing just comes back. And I'm too lazy to shave every day. Plus it'll be winter soon and the beard helps with temperature regulation when we dip into the high 60s. I'm only partly joking. I tell my wife every week that I'm going to shave it and then I get lazy and it's easier to just hit it with a trimmer for a minute.

I'm also not a fan of the top knot, but I'd give just about anything to have that as a stylistic option.

Joking aside, I've made a collection of independent style and lifestyle choices over the course of my life that may outwardly combine to give off the appearance of a hipster. But it just sort of happened that way. Fortunately I don't really care what others think of my "style." To me, the term hipster in a negative manner is more about people that take on the affectation of a certain subculture very deeply and in a very short period of time (and who are likely to shift again when there's a new "it" thing). Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's easy to see someone from the outside without knowing their history or motivations and label them a hipster. I'm a little sensitive to this as I get called a hipster somewhat frequently because of my tattoos, and it's always by someone that has no idea what the history or motivation is/was behind my decisions. This also starts getting into things like anthropology, which I know little to nothing about, so anything I say is just the ramblings of a bearded tattoo guy on the internet.

And back to joking, ever since the invention of the chinstrap beard we've been past peak beard and on the downslide.

PS - Google "Chinstrap Beard" and behold...

    Hey guys.

This is a thread complaining about facial hair. If we can keep the quality of our discourse up on the election thread, surely we can do it here too.
