Eddie if you can't find good Mexican food in SD you have a problem. The best stuff will probably be on a truck somewhere.
This was 7 or 8 years ago. Thanks to Google I think I found the place, but it has been replaced by a bar (on 5th Ave between F and G streets). Like the man above said, though: you're in southern CA. I think it's like getting good pizza in NYC.
My rule for restaurants on-the-go is to look for people smiling/enjoying their meal. Sad faces = move on. Also ask locals (I know: duh). I only went to this place because the reception at the place I was staying recommended it when I asked where they get food.
Seconded. I try this whenever I'm in a new city and it usually works. Also ask locals (I know: duh). I only went to this place because the reception at the place I was staying recommended it when I asked where they get food.
Though this did backfire on me once, in Austin. Coming from the airport I asked the cab driver, an older gentleman, where the best place to eat was. I was hoping for a recommendation on a good burger, steakhouse, or BBQ joint, but he suggested PF Chang's. Live and learn.
Absolutely no good Mexican in NYC? Seems hard to believe... like when people say there is no good pizza on the west coast. I've never had good mexican in nyc, but I just figured I don't know where to go.
He didn't ask for good Mexican in NYC. He asked for good, sit-down, take-the-family Mexican in Manhattan. Change the variables and we'll start throwing out answers.
Taqueria y Fonda at Amsterdam & 107th is very good. That's Manhattan Mexican. And I'm a big fan of Noche Mexicana at Amsterdam and 101st (which actually _is_ sit down and I used to take my kids there.) Wait, that might be the answer!
I said what I have to say.
Got some cash
Bought some wheels
Took it out
'Cross the fields
Lost Control
Hit a wall
But we're alright
Taqueria Tlaxcalli - Parkchester - Bronx, NY
This is my place for Mexican food. The beef tongue tacos and the salty beef are delicious. All the pork products are divine.
Yes, it's in the Bronx. I've been there a few times and families come with their little ones. The owner and the ladies who wait on you are all friendly.
Just about 5 minutes off the Cross Bronx.
Have never found a place in Manhattan that tops this. We even get a bag of the salty beef tacos to take home.
All the suggestions here are good. Did anyone mention Hecho en Dumbo? 354 Bowery, between Great Jones and East 4th street. Pretty good, good atmosphere. Not sure the portions equal the prices sometimes though.
For a middle of the day while shopping or post-ride total bonk-a-thon fill-a-hole I go to my local spoon which is Uncle Moe's Burritos on 19th near 5th. Not a fancy place, but the guy who owns the place has kept the same guys working with him for years. They make good fresh burritos and other things for fair prices. Not authentic perhaps, more like Southern California, but hey, they do a good job and man does it taste good at the end of a ride.
