Hard drives fail. They don't fail because of OS updates. But they fail quite regularly. If your hard drive failed within the warranty period for your mac, you get a free replacement. If you had AppleCare, you'd have a three year window against hard drive failure. If somehow your hard drive failed outside of the one year warranty period or the three year AppleCare period, that ain't Apple's fault.

i'm in warranty. i'm getting a free one. thank you for letting me know that apple hard drives fail regularly. all the more reason not to get another one.

the hard drive worked just fine until i 'upgraded'. now i have to spend between $300 and $1500 to recover my data because the f---s at apple can't or wont do it for me. nor will they reimburse me for some or all the cost of the data recovery. nor will they refund the $30 paid for the update (don't care about the $$; do care about the principle). nor have they done anything or been even remotely interested in showing me, even slightly, that they care about my business. and i have been nothing but courteous and respectful in my dealings with them. so far. sometimes you just have to fight arrogant prickishness with arrogant prickishness. i'm getting to that point. even considering draining their cash reserve with a needless lawsuit.

i guess what pisses me off the most is that i was duped into buying the hype.

did i mention i despise apple?

FYI - There are 8 or so major hard drive manufacturers and probably a handful of other no-name brands. Apple uses one of those manufacturers (or a couple depending on model and size requirements), as does every other PC maker on this planet. Some are better than others, some aren't. You can't blame apple for that. Sounds like you had a bad experience with their customer service too, which everyone knows can be hit or miss (just like most other companies).

As noted elsewhere, Apple doesn't make hard drives. They use the same drives used in pc's. They all fail.

How is it their responsibility to back up your data for you? There'd be no cost for data recovery if you'd merely set up time machine and used it regularly to back up to a different drive. And, again, the drive didn't die because of the upgrade, it died because it's time had come. Hard drives are like light bulbs: they're absolutely going to fail. That's why Apple strongly suggests backing up your data and created an simple to use backup app.

They're replacing your hard drive for free. They've made your computer whole again by doing so. They'd even restore your data for free if you could provide them with a backup. Again, how is it their problem or fault that you apparently didn't back up?

velobran - i was sold, in part, on what was supposed to be a superior customer experience that was completely unlike most other companies. not true, as it happens. lesson learned.

jonathanb - it isn't their fault that i didn't back up; it isn't my fault that a 5 month old hard drive failed almost immediately after i installed software that they designed and sold to the public. all i want is to be in the same position i was in before downgrading to lion. i expected a good faith effort on their part to try and make me happy (or at least make me less unhappy); that hasn't happened. which leads to the obvious question: why pay more for hardware that fails just like the rest, software that might be prettier than the competition but is functionally the same and no more robust, and a customer experience that is not much different than dealing with, say, delta or comcast? the only reasonable answer, sadly, is: fanboys (and girls) are easy to dupe. this boy no longer a fan. i look forward to again not being one of the sheeple sporting an annoying, luminescent apple on the backside of my laptop screen.

apple hw and sw design is better than any other laptop maker out there...as was pointed out though, they do not make the hard-drives. Hard drives will fail and they fail randomly. 1 week, 2 weeks , 5 months, 3 years...anytime. Back up you data. There is simply no excuse not to for both this possibility, and for the possibility of theft, fire, etc. If you want to be free of hard drive failure headaches and have a faster machine...get a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro with a SSD drive upgrade, or upgrade your current machine with an SSD. Problem solved. But...still back up your data.

yes, they're definitely prettier than anything else. irony is, when i owned pcs i used to back up religiously. never had an issue. i - naively - bought into the alleged robustness of apple's platform. i will have to pay to get my data; they will lose a customer (yes, i know they couldn't care less but venting at least makes me feel better).

Dude. You didn't back up your computer before upgrading the OS. Time to own it and give the whining a rest, sorry.

Audio-wise, I use steinberg daw and hardware, and they have been very slow to offer new drivers. I've been down since the upgrade and limping along with an apogee duet. Good thing I don't record commercially any longer.
