One last look at some foreplay...
(I was planning an early moring training ride, then group ride...but this sinus bullshit is caving in my head.)
Coughing and spitting up green nasties. YUCK!

Anyway, one last set of pics before the tubes go under the torch.
Bottle cage bosses set, derailleur hanger set, and cable tunnel set.

I'm off to pick up an RX and a giant effing Monster energy poison.
Dorito's sound good too...it's been a year off junk food.
    (Two years no booze.)
    This has been fun..........................

Luke, I'm pleased you are finally planning to do your practice brazing. I've been wanting to nag you about that for some time. My recommendation is to start simple with thick materials to learn the necessary hand motions first. Heavy walled stuff will give you more time to understand what is happening as you apply heat and slow down your need to react before it all goes south. That will give you the foundation to work on the thinner materials you have chosen. Good luck!

I have watched this thread with great interest. I have been envious of the amount of time you have been able to spend on the project. I haven't touched my frame for a few weeks now since we have had perfect weather for tree planting on my acreage. I think your attention to detail is incredible, and am anxiously awaiting to see how the brazing turns out. I suspect you have some skill in this area up your sleeve, and are not using a torch for the first time.

Here is a shot at Doug's silver practice tip...using three sticks of brass rod and a scrap tube drilled out...

My Derailleur tang went beautifully, until I realized that it had moved around the tube just slightly.
I heated it and pulled it back off, aligned it and brazed it back up.
(That one is a bit messy...with all of the extra material from the re-braze.)
    Picture later...on the Der hanger.

I moved on to another practice piece. A small chunk of chainstay material and to slices of leftover tube.
I wanted to attempt to cap off both ends...quickly and cleanly. Sort of to mimic a seatstay cap.
What I ended up with is a neat little sexy capsule.
I may continue to clean this piece up a bit more, maybe send it out for nickel or chrome.
The contents of the capsule represent everything that I know for sure- NOTHING.

I may hang it on a chain. I may carry it with me from this point forward.

This is me making a mess of the cable routing tunnel...
As Doug has said, only 10% of his students pull this off.
(I decided to go for it.)

That piece of stainless heated up superfast ! I had to try to 'get in and get out' quickly.
Need some clean up here. But should be OKAY.
The second end went better than the first.

I have a few pinholes to add material to...but I'm happy with the outcome.
***If you're sloppy with a torch, you had better be good with a file. LOL
Jeez that stuff goes on quick...and comes off hard.

    Enjoy the tunnel...

The hanger tab took some cleaning up, and she is still in need of some love...

The sun had went down, and it was a bit dark in the shop...I was tired...and so was the macro. ;(
(Sorry Devlin if the blurry blurry blurry gives you a headache.)

    Nice work,

Are you going to braze a reinforcement around the cable tunnel entry?

I'm not sure Keith...I hadn't planned on it. It does produce some very thin areas around it doesn't it?
Thanks for the compliment also. :)

    Luke,

This an awesome thread!! I really enjoy seeing the progress. However, do you remove the pins (nails) after you tack it up or do you braze them in place?

Braze them in and cut 'em off.

OKAY...on with this head tube badge tangent.
I've got my design, and now thanks to a VS member named Honus...
I have the working knowledge of how to create it.
    Many thanks.

    Head badge patterns...
Building this in a 3D aspect.
"Onions have layers", then so can my head badge.
Three layers...the bottom is the outline of the entire badge.
The second is the raised rim, cutout from a second badge shape.
    The third is the M.
    002 (8).jpg
    003 (5).jpg

14ga. solid brass as the material.
Predrilled holes will house 1/8" brass rod that is ground into the rivet head shape.
    Details to follow via pics.

I found out if I hold a hacksaw blade in my teeth, curl my toes around a piece of brass sheet, and assume a certain yoga position...
I can cut out cool shapes!

I have laid out of pieces and begin cutting them out...
    Tiny saw+ Tiny blades= Tiny M
    (It's about an inch square)

    Steamboat report:
Seen in a chocolate shop yesterday, a new treat!
It was dark and light chocolate covered twizzlers---they called them HALF PIPES.
    YUMMO.

Going to tour MOOTS this morning.
Need my bike fix for the day.
