Apple Cider and ginger brined chickens
Oyster dressing
Ginger snap gravy
Broccoli casserole
Sweet potatoes

Basic.

Salt and pepper crusted roast beef with Bearnaise sauce. Who knew that's basically butter mayonnaise with tarragon?
Rutabaga and potato gratin.
Sautéed Swiss Chard with pine nuts and raisins.

All just supporting cast for sticky banana walnut pudding with caramel sauce and whipped cream.

Wine for some, but for the good children stouts from Finback and Other Half breweries.

Our oldest is headed back to Seattle this afternoon so we had to prepare her favorite breakfast as a farewell present. Martha Stewart's Belgian waffle recipe (the secret is folding in the whipped egg whites) never fails to deliver and the WaffleTone griddle gets the job done.

Guy...that's a take on the old Betty Crocker 3qt batter bowls...my wife's favorite mixing bowl for pancakes, waffles and recipes that require pouring something into a small area. We found it at Williams-Sonoma years ago.

Mike...I think that I posted the recipe here before but I’ll look it up just to make sure. The secret is folding in the three egg whites into the batter. They are so light and fluffy, you’ll never go back to Hampton Inn pancake batter waffles again. I don’t use syrup but my wife and kids like butter and powdered sugar. One batch makes 9 on that particular waffle iron and I freeze the leftovers. Not bad in a pinch but fresh tastes better.

We had some friends over for a holiday dinner last evening and Chicken Bouillabaisse got the call. Pretty easy to make and very nice on a cold, snowy night. Fresh salad to open things up and dessert was Affogato...espresso over vanilla gelato. I suggest a single shot over a double.

Herring Roe to represent the prosperity of your offspring.
Black Beans- Mame - represent health and industriousness
Mashed sweet potato and chestnuts - bright yellow - implies hope for abundant fortune
Small dried sardines (Tazukuri) - dried sardines were fertilizer in the old days, hope for abundant harvest (Tazukuri means to make rice)
Rolled sweet egg omlets - wish for auspicious days

Anything Red is for joyfulness, anything white is for holiness.

Ozone soup - that is smashed sticky rice.

The best part is you wash this all down with Toso which is sake spiced with medicinal herbs for good health.

We did a traditional southern New Years meal yesterday. Hoppin John (rice and black eyed peas) and turnip greens and some apple smoked pork tenderloin with a blackberry sauce. The sauce was really good. It's in Weber's 'New American Barbecue" cookbook.

It was a cold evening at the hacienda yesterday, warmed by a few longtime friends who braved the weather and shared wine, stories and cheer. Dinner consisted of chicken in a white wine and citrus reduction, with rice pilaf and roasted brussels sprouts. I can't take credit for the chocolate mousse and candy cane sprinkle...it was awesome with a cappuccino.
