this makes me so sad, all this single use plastic. another is all the single use plastics we use as consumers. i ordered some tires from a german supplier a while back, was happy to see that they only packed a bit of paper in there with them. no plastic bags or styrofoam bubbles...

Alternatively, only bottle Newark and Flint water...then make elected officials drink it until the problems with municipal water supplies are fixed.

There's obviously a couple necessary exceptions to a bottled water ban, Flint being one of them. Probably better just pushing Newark into the ocean though. Disaster relief being the other big one. But pretty much any soda packaging facility or brewery can switch to bottling/canning water in a matter of hours.

... and now the dear leader is mocking her on Twitter.

Yes, that's right, the President of the United States is mocking an autism spectrum, physically underdeveloped teenage girl (with the moral conscience that few of us even come close to possessing) on Twitter (seems that he couldn't do it to her face, as they did cross one another's paths at the UN).

    On Twitter.

Jesus Christ. Please someone wake me up from this nightmare.

When her parents and handlers instill her with this type of fear & terror then send her out to perform on the world political stage, she loses her ‘do not criticize a child card’.

It's really a brilliant strategy from those putting Miss Thunberg on stage: it's easy to mock DiCaprio or Gore or AOC (I mean really, really easy), but the same "thinkers" can hide behind this girl's skirt and then shriek "HOW DARE YOU ATTACK A CHILD" when the (sadly predictable) responses from pundits and a loud-mouthed President roll in.

It's not about the planet, or future generations, or about sea levels. It's about provoking a response from ideological opponents in an attempt to demonize them. Sadly, the "thinkers" on the opposite side are stupid enough to fall for it - and that's laughable. But it's kinda sad for the cowards on the side Miss Thunberg has been told to have. They sure didn't mind maligning Nick Sandmann and his pals in Covington, who had the temerity to smirk at a group of vile racists led by Nathan Phillips, and retweeting their "thought-leaders" who quite literally wished for those boys to be physically harmed.

This whole charade is disgusting. I used to expect better from this place.

Even if this was true - would you? I don't think so. Would you encourage your children to do so? I seriously doubt it. Would you tolerate such bullying in your own community? I can't imagine you would. But you've implied here that it's acceptable for the President to do so? To bully a teenage girl over Twitter?

Let's say she did something to REALLY deserve it - let's say she did something objectively, undeniably terrible. Would it be ok then? To mock a developmentally delayed teen on Twitter? To an audience of millions? Even if she had "handlers?"

Help me understand your reasoning, Glen. Because either you're not the man I though you were, or I'm just not getting it. Help me. Really.

“She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!”

The above is Trumps tweet. From your description and headlines, I was expecting something quite different.

Typical no-win situation for the President, no matter what he says about her, it's "making fun of an autistic kid".

See my earlier post: Put a kid out there in public, get public reaction and the predictable result is: "outrageous! How can you criticize a child!"

I'm respect her guts, but she's still a kid lecturing world leaders. I like it in some way, but something about it doesn't sit right.

HE. IS. MOCKING. A. CHILD. WHO. ALSO. HAPPENS. TO. HAVE. A. DISABILITY.

    PERIOD. THE. END.

Before you reply or continue this discussion, go check out Greta Thunberg's Twitter page. In particular, take a look at how she describes herself. Then compare and contrast that with President Fucking Moron's tweet about her. To the extent you continue to defend him on this, you are defending what is absolutely, unequivocally, 100% indefensible. Donald Trump is human scum. He is a load that should have been swallowed.

    ^^^

    Really?

Trump posted this after her tearful and heartfelt plea to the UN to do something. She certainly is not a happy girl. I have a very strong feeling that you know as well as everyone else this was meant sarcastically and facetiously. I cannot believe for one moment that you believe this was meant at face value. Because it most certainly was not.

I have no issue with being critical of her message (even if I might vehemently disagree with it). What I can't understand are the personal attacks against her as a person.

    1) “She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!” I don't see bullying here. A bit of snark & sarcasm maybe.

    2) Whatever her challenges may be (I've not seen or read anything that speaks to this, until your post) and whatever her age is (16?) that doesn't afford her a platform to perform & critique others on the political stage without being critiqued herself.

    3) I'm sure we both agree on this: we both feel sympathy for her.

When my daughter was 16, she was already very active in gender and relationship violence issues. She did not get this from either me or her mother. (Mom is an extreme non-activist.) So I really don't understand this insistence she is being handled and manipulated.

Snark and sarcasm is really the President holding her in contempt. If anything, the snarky comments of the President are more childish than her comments. I don't see her as being particularly sassy....

We are in a salon here and we should maintain a minimum of decorum and manners.

But yes. Yes it does. Because she is a child. An exemplary child. Disagree with the message if you will, I have no problem with that (although I would vehemently disagree). Because standards of human decency make it so that we don't "critique" 16 year old girls. Critique the message. Not the child. And yes, she is a child, developmentally and neurologically. How do we "critique" teenagers anyway?

Recently there was an adolescent brother of a young woman who was killed who actually advocated for no further gun restrictions, as he was an enthusiast as well. He garnered a lot of media attention, and I'm sure, was pilloried on social media. While I disagree- strongly - with his message, it never occurred to me to "critique" him for having these views. He could have spoken before the UN extolling the values of gun ownership. I would have found this extremely unfortunate, to be sure, but would I "critique" him as a person? No, because he is a child.

Generally speaking, I agree with you. Alas, every rule has its exception and this "president" deserves that venom. He has earned it.

I have a sixteen year old, so I find the suggestion that someone is putting Greta up to anything amusing since my child won't listen to a word I say, which I am told is typical of the age.
