I saw that... seems a bit stiff for something that maybe ought to be $10E or a warning to me.
@SlowPokePete - might want to take notice.
good lookin' out...

They got off easy. Punters.
Fuh crizzsakes the best coffee every place they turn and they fire up a freakin' stove in the platza.
It's like peeing on Da Vinci's grave because you couldn't hold it.
A line was crossed.

I think it’s pronounced “plotz-a.”
Venice is a place I'm happy seeing on film and video. Too many tourista.
ill challenge venice to a cup of coffee competition any day of the week and all day on weekends. they have to pay my airfare though. and when i win they have to feed me.

The New York Times is a bit pissy about its paywall.

what they were doing was a little disrespectful in one of the tourist capitals of the world where the local cafes (via their guests) help pay to keep the city vibrant and beautiful. And the coffee in the bars is not even that expensive. It does seem the consequences were quite harsh but I imagine we do not know the whole story.
Try to get a cup of ice in France or ask for milk in your coffee after 11 am or eat breakfast before 8 am.
Showing deference in the face of scrutiny is a good beginning, revolution happens after. Yeah yeah it's just a cup of coffee to you maybe.
The outrage culture is not a desirable export item.
OK ok that's as inflammatory as I'll get today. Promise.

All things that I read on tourist websites and none of which are true, just like all of the pizza and coffee being good in Venice (it's not). Finding a cup of ice here is easy, people drink lattes all day, and most boulangeries are open by 7h or earlier (and the average breakfast around here is patisserie + café). There's garbage pizza and stale coffee in Venice just like there are vending machine croissants in Paris and dry jambalaya in NOLA.
People should be allowed to brew a cup where they want and eat a sandwich on the sidewalk. As someone who bikepacks and backpacks around I understand the importance of independence, routine as a grounding device in a constantly changing landscape, and penny-pinching. Maybe firing up a stove on a sidewalk is a step too far, but expulsion and a $1000 fine seems a bit heavy handed.
"Do you want ants? Because that's how you get ants."
So you guys would be OK with someone camped outside your office, or home, making a nice cuppa over a propane stove?
Not me. I live in a tourist destination and find the people who treat Boston as an Instagram photo op really annoying.
We're not talking about housing the homeless, we're talking about tourists treating the natives and their city as a backdrop for their convenience. It's thoughtless at best and exploitative at worst. I approve of Venice making a very public example of these yahoos.
Oh irony.
I'll take your complaint to my reporter friend. I'm sure she'll be happy to work without pay so you can read her work for free.
GO!
We are talking about a public place, a bridge, not your porch. As long as people don't leave trash in the place there is no reason to go into defensive mode. I don't think we know enough about what happened in that particular event to describe the mentionned 2 german tourists as yahoos.

I try not to bother other people.

I'll play. I've seen the police photo. I am pretty sure that is the north side right next to the bridge. I also believe there is the relief of the annunciation and a little shrine relief for the virgin mary where local believers leave flowers. If one of the few remaining locals came to leave flowers, and these two were there with all their backpack stuff strewn about as per photo, yeah I think they get busted. I am pretty sure I get busted if I try to brew a cup of joe on the steps of St Paul's in London.
Venice should just do what Bhutan does and charge a higher fee for day trippers. Cruise ships are really taxing the place now. I hike the rate and charge more than Disney that 's for sure. The city can use the funds to repair the damage caused by all the tourists and cruise ships.
