Laptop for work + Fusion 360 - Spec Suggestion.

Hi Folks,

I just found out that the new job has a BYOD policy — I start Monday and I'm not stoked about this but whatever it's too late. I'm sure that whatever I buy new will have enough power for the day-to-day workings (Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, etc) but I'm also teaching myself Fusion 360.

I know what the minimum requirements are for Fusion 360 but since I'm new to the 3D world I'd love to hear what I should be aiming for -- I'd like to get at least 3 years out of this machine.


FTR I've been 100% Mac based but I'm not opposed to picking up a PC (work is agnostic about what I use).

This thing has been rocking Photoshop for me. It blasts through anything I want to do with my 50MP raw files with tons of layers, 3 file HDR etc. so I think it could handle anything you might want to throw at it...

I just learned that even most tricked out laptop will be limited by it's cooling. Once the processor gets hot enough it slows itself down so it doesn't overheat. If you're going for a fast processor and video card you might not want the thinnest or passively cooled model. Obviously I'm not answering your question but thought it was something good to learn.

What are your size & weight requirements? We use Lenovo ThinkPads at work for CAD. It might be a bit hefty, but check out the "P" Series laptops.

I have been running a P51 for about two and a half years now. It’s solid. Big.... but solid. Regular user of NX and a few other graphics intensive softwares. Two thumbs up, would buy again.

Most of the folks who don’t do so much graphics intensive work love our X1 Carbons.

I run Fusion daily on a desktop but I've been wanting a laptop to do stuff when I'm not at the shop. One thing I'll recommend is to get a 3d space mouse. Best thing since sliced bread for working in 3d.

Autodesk has their own forum, seems like there's a good number of people that run Fusion on a mac so I would think you could stay with your OS if that's what you wanted.
