Screws are the way to go if you can do it. I have broken my right navicular twice. Both time putting a screw in was not a good idea. Therefore, I was in a cast 3 month each time of 1/97th of my life.

Thanks to Sir Paul and John for the lyrics...Mrs. RW and I leave for London on Sunday, a town that we haven't been to since '88. To say that we are stoked is truly an understatement and although a few years and miles have passed since then, we are approaching the trip with the same level of enthusiasm and excitement as we did when the Queen Mum was still with us.

Mr Joosttx - London has been my main home for 40 years. Amongst all the obvious amazing things to do, don't think the London Eye is a tourist trap. If you can go on a vaguely clear day it is excellent.

Well, I am somewhat back in the saddle from our trip overseas and so thankful that we were able to have such a wonderful experience. 4 days in London and 10 days with a mix of Venice, Florence and Rome. Regardless of where we were, every corner presented some viewpoint of history and culture which we found to be so fascinating and I thought that my wife was going to drop over when visiting Windsor Castle, as the Queen was in residence.

Beyond the monumental historical structures, sculptures and artwork, Italy left me in awe in terms of the attention to every little artistic and design detail, whether it be the architecture, colors and design elements of an apartment or hotel or the manner in which a simple sandwich shop displayed their wares. We averaged 6-7 miles/day on foot and walking the streets allowed even more time to take it all in.

I also don’t know that I will ever view coffee and food in the same manner, from both a taste and experience point of view. The best part is that I was able to enjoy this experience with Mrs. RW, who has now ditched her vanilla lattes for a small cappuccino.

PS Remind me to tell you sometime about waiting in line for Palm Sunday Mass at the Vatican with Jun (gent from the Philippines), Sister Abigail (Swiss nun) and Maurice (gent from Haiti)...sounds like a Henny Youngman joke I know, but they allowed us to score a seat about 15’ from where Papa Francesco made his entrance and exit.

Italy is great. The food there is how food should taste everywhere but doesn't because it is not Italy.

I often find myself wondering how they built things while visiting places. Did you find yourself distracted or is just my superintendent mind? I try
to engage my wife in these discussions but she just gives me the stink eye.

Mike...I always find myself drawn to the older structures, bridges, tunnels and roads as I cannot imagine the efforts, methods and materials involved in such endeavors. Not that sculptures, artwork and ornate marble and stonework pass me by, but the sheer mass of structures like the Coliseum and Pantheon...whoa Nellie. My lovely bride ignores my frequent stops for 5 pics of a piece of stone that God knows how many people it took to quarry it, transport it, sculpt it and set it. We should start a new thread!

    RW,

How would you rate the coffee in the countries you visited?

Hey Larry...If I recall, you have some serious coffee gear so I’ll try to answer in one of the coffee threads a bit later to save space for the Friday celebrations.

Double grump slam this week...our youngest kid finished his first year of engineering school and our middle kid finished his first year of optometry school, with both of them headed to the next level. Only 24 tuition payments left for the youngest and I will be a free man.

Well, I was going to have to sit in a jury box for 2+ weeks during a murder 1 trial, but the accused accepted a plea this morning while we all waited in the hall for two hours. Worth it. Sad for the victim and sad for the accused’s wife and kid, but now I can escape the city and enjoy a rainy Friday in the country.

I'm happy with my job. My bike isn't squeaking or rattling. The weather is great. If my luck holds, I'll be in NYC with my wife in three weeks.

Headed to Bloomington for a long weekend visit with our oldest son/middle kid at IU. Might have to watch Breaking Away and throw a few Italian words around town later tonight in honor of Dave Stoller...

    My daughter's engaged.

It was not anything like a surprise, but it still makes real and public the state & stability of their relationship, and commitment these two young people have for each other.

Tonight we celebrate with the happy couple.
