Get Your Grump on Thursdays - Was (What's chapping my @ss today?)

Some guy tried to back up so that they could get a parking spot that was freeing up. I was already there waiting and a guy was even behind me. He backs up blocking the person trying to leave the parking spot and almost runs into me. I give him a honk to cut this silliness out and he make another jolt towards me. Then he pulls away the lady leaves the parking spot and I pull in and get out of my car. The dude pulls up and starts acosting me. I told I couldn’t even back up if I wanted to bc a car was behind me. Then he says “ at least I need to admit I’m an a$$hole for pulling this move.”

My gripe is what happened after this. I called him a little shit and then a pussy . He called me a bunch of names. And I walked off as he and his highschool aged son are yelling stuff at me. Pissed at myself for not taking the higher road since I had won his perceived war of getting the parking spot.

Sorry no back ups when you miss a parking spot.

Somehow I think this played out differently in Marin than it might have in Oakland. But a learning moment for sure. Sometimes I find myself as my own Dad (me) lecturing my angry hormonal adolescent (me again). But mostly, cars suck.

Not "Smoky Conditions May Exist" or "It might be smoky" or "That's the smoke you see" or "Don't worry, keep driving and don't rubberneck"... they don't even want to be pinned down and say it is actual smoke! No, that's just "Smoke Conditions", kiddies, not real smoke or nothin'... could be fog, could be mist... could be a bad contact lens for all we know. We ain't saying that's smoke no we're not! Hell, none of you clean your windshields so how can you tell there's anything out there?

On the Long Island Expressway, location of eternal traffic jams, they've put up giant traffic signs that show two panels, one after the other, to let people know what traffic is like the next several major exits. Cars are typically driving so close together, that even on light days when traffic is flowing well and everyone is going 55-75 (and beyond) little things like a tire on the side of the road or a truck left over from a DUI arrest the night before will create a bottle neck. And what happens when people go under the giant signs that provide helpful information on traffic ahead? They all slow down to read the two screens that flash sequentially, the slow down creates a bottleneck, and the bottleneck eventually leads to a traffic jam. The lighted traffic signs cause* traffic jams.

*Well all the damn cars cause the traffic jams but the traffic signs create their own stumbling block.

Tomorrow my wife and I leave for 6 days in Mallorca. The weather forecast looks worse (read: colder and rainier) than here at home in Germany.

A bit of a bummer but I'm trying to adjust my expectations, it's still a vacation after all. Any rainy day activity suggestions are welcome..

Clif’s Notes:

FIL dealing with a nasty bout of pneumonia. Family thinking his time is coming to an end. Hospital is doing a piss poor job, in my opinion. 3 weeks ago he was released after less than 24hrs after being diagnosed, but being symptomatic for at least a week. 10 days later he’s back in the ER. Pneumonia not under control. Spends a few days in the hospital, get released again. I’m pissed. But Drs say it’s under control. It’s not. Persistent fever. Drs conceed that fever might be due to cancer (2yrs ago diagnosed, in remission), but don’t know for sure. We don’t know what’s going on. Neither do the Drs.

Wifey goes up today to help take care of him. He’s feeling a little better, having gotten some good sleep. I’m taking our kids up tomorrow, in fear that it’ll be the last time they see him.

Family want to lighten things up this eve, so MIL is going to bake a pie. Wifey volunteers to get the ingredients.

Sweeping right hand turn, westbound, 7pm. 3 blocks from parents’ house. Here comes a sneeze.

Unfortunately, her also comes a vehicle parked on the road that can’t be seen clearly because of the setting sun.

Wife sneezes at the exact moment she shouldn’t have. Sideswiped the back end of the vehicle.

Her car? Likely totaled. Airbag deployed (driveside, but she swiped her passenger side. That doesn’t compute.)

Her physical self? Fine, despite airbag deploying.

Her emotional psyche? Totaled.

Had a one way discussion with one of my supervisors today. He had a temper tantrum yesterday evening at work. I confronted him about his behavior and he was just contrite about the whole thing. When he left my office I wanted to throw something but the only thing in reach was a hardback copy of Emotional Intelligence 2.0. The irony wasn't lost on me.

Small Furry Creatures. It is not enough that they dug up and ate every single crocus bulb I planted last fall except for the one that buddied up with a daffodil. That one they ate after it came up and they identified it. No, now they are not eating the daffodils and the grape hyacinth. They are just biting the blooms off and leaving them there on the ground to spite me.

You know that your kid's first year of engineering school went well, when after you cleanly pulverize the arse end of 130# deer going 75mph on I70 at 10:00pm while taking him home from college, he asks about the gvw of the van and the speed, so that he can calculate the force with which I did the 7-10 spit with two deer. The semi to the left of me finished them off in fine fashion so I had to take a guess about the weight of the deer, based on the road lasagna and carnage that remained on the road. BTW, this van takes no prisoners and has survived three decent collisions...it just laughs off the damage.

If I wanted snow I'd have moved to Canada! I'm camping in Mohawk Trail State Forest starting wednesday and the forecast is for 1-3 inches of snow tomorrow into tuesday. Brrr... Grrr...
