    Default Stinky skunk coffee

We got some coffee from a local roaster. Usually the coffee from there is very good, but in this case, the coffee has a very strong skunky smell - and by skunky I mean they smell stinky like pot - that is actually in the taste as well. The roast is pretty light - probably between a 7 and 8 on this chart - so I was wondering whether some kind of spoilage is going on or if these beans are just not roasted enough. Quite a strong aftertaste. The roast date is within 3-4 days of when we bought it, which was 3 days ago, so that's 6-7 days after roasting? They are kept in a tall glass canning jar with that metal hinge and rubber gasket top. Looks like smells like tastes like then it is but what's up?

Sounds like you may have a stinker or two in the roast. This is a processing defect so take it back to the roaster, they'll want to know.

I started roasting my own late last year, it's been an interesting learning curve.

Huh, that sounds like the right description. I’ll mention it today when I stop in for replacements.

Mark, you got it spot on. Bad bunch of beans in the roaster spoiled several batches. The coffee smelled okay just out of the roaster, but they think once bagged the beans off-gassed and stinky beans were the result upon unsealing the bag. They tried to go back and find all of them but they missed a few bags. They gratis’d my new bags.

    Learn something new.

That is not a way to solve the problem. I liken that to finding a worm in your salad, having the waiter pick it out and say there it is ok now. I think it would be the expensive way to do it, but I would have scrapped the whole batch. Your reputation is really all you have to sell.

Maybe my English isn't very good. Everything seemed fine after roasting, but after some sealed bags (i.e. roasted coffee in retail packaging) were opened, they realized something was wrong. They took all the bags from those batches off the shelf, but they evidently missed a couple bags. I got one. When I went in, I mentioned it, they apologized, told me the story and gave me my two bags of coffee free. As far as I can tell, these new bags are fine. I'd say that's good customer service.

I'm not sure how your worm in the salad analogy fits my experience at all.

It sounded like they were picking all the bad beans out a bag and repackage the rest. My bad.

When I worked for a large food manufacturer, we got a crunchy nut bar returned with half a mouse in it. The obvious question was "where's the other half?" The recall cost an absolute fortune but there's no other real option.

We never found the other half.
