I’ve never liked Neuspeed stuff. No VW up to that generation handled better if you lowered them much. objectively most SoCal style tuner GTIs handle worse than stock. That being said- that thing could actually benefit from changing the ride height- those things look more like BMWs when it comes to suspension Than the gen1-4s. I don’t know- it wouldn’t be the stuff I’d do to a GTI to make it awesome.
Again- the way to make a GTI drive GREAT is better shocks, stiffer springs, put in a giant rear sway bar, maybe even take out the front one, and put some sticky tires on there.
The cars make good power with simple tuning too.
I love GTIs. I’ve literally owned seven of them.
Sean- happy to point you to some awesome ones that are priced right if you want. Hit me up dood.
Yes, good points. I don't think I would pay him the asking price, no matter how much I like it. And I had the same thought about the sub, probably sell that immediately on craigslist. He also said all the OEM parts are included, which may have some value if sold on a forum or whatever. But yea, would fully expect to not pay the asking price
I've had 5 total Rabbit GTIs: 1984 Rabbit GTI (red/red), 1983 Rabbit GTI (red/blue), 1984 Rabbit GTI (red/blue), 1984 Rabbit GTI (silver/blue), 1983 Rabbit GTI (silver/blue). I also had a 1998 VR6 GTI, purchased it new, and sold it less than a year later as it just wasn't as fun as my Mk1 GTIs. I've also owned a 1978 Rabbit (4-door), a 1977 Rabbit (2-door) and a 1981 Rabbit (2-door). Had a couple of Golfs too, a Mk2 (2-door) and a Mk4 (4-door).
Anyway, this beast was by far my favorite (photo taken sometime around 1996):
Here's another photo taken around the same time up at New Hampshire International Speedway with some Euro bumper installed:
It had several suspension parts from Shine Racing Service and lots of other goodies, too many to list. I only visited Dick a couple times as my mechanic was Brian Mushnick at Brian's Garage in Needham. Great mechanic, great guy. Anyway, as the 1990s closed out my interest in GTIs and VWs in general waned.
Yea, I wasn't sure about his decision to put lowering springs, but not coilovers on it. Probably the cheap option. At least the OEM springs are still there. Appreciate the offer, and I'll let you know. I know they can be had cheaper, but I also don't want something clapped out by a douchy kid. Based on the ad, and my call to this guy, he seems pretty mature (stupid sub woofer notwithstanding!) and prolly babied this thing and with only 14K miles its basically a blank canvas.
he talked about this on the phone, said yea, could've put micheln cups or something on it, but that's pretty dumb for road use. I agree. He lives in central PA in the hills; putting track tires on this thing would render it not useable for most backroads near there.

Brian is still there. It’s where I take my 2015 (box stock) GTI.
that's actually pretty good, and in PA we can get 7 digits. Even my German buddy never told me about that word.
As it so happens, I drove it this am and now have a bill of sale in my pocket. THis thing is cherry. Got it for 18 even and with all the OEM parts included so I think I did OK. Looks like he babied it. This thing is a riot with the lowered springs, sway bars, short shifter etc. Exhaust was louder than I expected, but it seems you can quiet it down just by using a gear or two higher than you need. The 5 mile stretch of rolling PA farm roads right behind the guy's house proved to be an effective sales strategy. I hope 4th, 5th and 6th gears work fine b/c I was doing 70 in 3rd gear without even thinking about it. I should post a vid when I get the tags and bring it home.

Nice find Sean...too bad that you can't fit Fahrvergnügen on the rear plate. It would look good with one of those recycled German plates on the front...they're all over eBay.

Gonna keep the front clean for now. one of the best reasons to title a car in PA is lack of front plate requirement. I don't know why we tolerate desecrating the fronts of our cars in so many states here. I might tolerate a 2nd term of trump if we could eliminate front plates
