--- those with vw's......, your advice please:

tammy drives bmw "m" series suv.., damn i'm a loving husband..

i have a nissan exterra with 103k miles.., 16-18 mpg.. had a "picumup" for our move to georgia.., sold it last week.., no longer needed..
my hauling days are over for job related and bikes, but sure love the driving/weight distribution of a rear wheel drive..
guess my choices are limited and i need something to fit in the garage too..

leaning toward vw gti, subaru impreza hatchback or mazda sport x3..

your help greatly appreciated with a smile,
    ronnie

Not a VW owner and no dog in this scandal business, but I am looking for a new vehicle and things like the Impreza and Mazda's are on my short list. I am leaning strongly towards a Mazda. Low cost of ownership, fun to drive, and available in manual. I haven't sat in one myself, but I am told the Mazda 3 and cx3 are laughably small in the back. Like, adequate for a kid between 6 - 11, but not much more. I'm thinking the cx5 is a worthwhile upgrade over the cx3 for the space.

I drove a (last gen) Mazda 3 for a week as a rental and was very impressed. I would absolutely consider a nice S Grand Touring. This one, for well under $30k:

    Ronnie:

I have a 2016 GTI Autobahn 6MT with the performance package and it is a fun car to drive.

The S Grand Touring 3 is available with a 6s manual and the 2.5l engine for the first time this year.

I drive a 2010 GTI and am pretty happy with it.
As a perk, you can get it with the DSG gearbox, which is notably absent from most US VWs. You don't get to brag about it, but shifts are fast enough to be as fun as manual, and your left foot will thank you if you plan to spend any time in standing traffic.

Another option is a Fiesta RS or Focus RS. I've test driven the Fiesta RS, and it was ton of fun, and you could buy new for the price of a used GTI. The only reason I ended up with a GTI was the DSG: if I lived somewhere less congested, I would have bought a Ford.

Now I'm thinking of getting a golf type R. The AWD and extra grunt would be welcome over a GTI.

If you do, send me a PM. I have a huge pile of new, never used Golf R parts sitting here (brake rotors, pads, engine oil, transmission oil, filters, etc). I don't want to throw them out....

im reading a book about this scandal.
it is interesting reading and commentary on corporate malfeasance and arrogance.

any book on VW has to start with a picture of ferdinand porsche showing a model of the beetle to adolph hitler...

Funny that you should bump this today. Today, Germany recalled new Porsche Cayenne diesels because the cars have similar cheating software built in.

    evolving story, eh?
wonder if they have already been recalled in usa?
by far a bigger problem for them in us courts.

just finished book... it is mentioned that they were in the settlement... another 1.5b.

While we miss our Sportwagen v. much, we were quite glad to turn it in having clocked almost 25K miles per year on 'er and not spending one red cent on maintenance/upkeep as soon as the scandal broke.

Posting now because the past few weeks, I'm seeing TDI golfs, Jettas, etc. - later models and several ca. the age of our 2010. Frankly, I'm surprised. Anyone here keep yours? How come? Genuinely curious?

I drive a 2013 R. 65K trouble-free miles. Great brakes. Nimble. Excellent on the highway, great school-bus. Not a Jeep, for those of you who live in snow country.

I'd be interested in the parts- why do you have a pile?

ridiculous in a car like that.
    i had a tdi...
    60k miles? timing belt?
    service cost me almost $900...
i was so pissed i got rid of the car.
service so $$ it would have been cheaper to drive a corvette.

    should have a timing chain.
