Use a back-up for inside the shell, and don't wallop the numbers too hard. The force can distort the shell, especially with some of the thin-wall ones available nowadays.

OK, a little late in the game, but I used to number all of my bikes with a date code so I could tell when it was built. I recently received back through a trade the 40th bike I built. The serial number is 00400888, or number 0040 built in August of 1988. When you get to be my age, you can't remember all of those details. It's nice to look at a bunch of numbers and tell someone exactly when it was built.

I had a late 90s Keith Anderson, I believe it was 1996. He is a native of Indianapolis, where I live and always lusted after his frame. The paint quality was second to none, along with the attention to detail on the lugs. When he build mine, he had recently moved out to Moab, so I went through a friend of his who owned a shop in Cicero, IN. I had him build me a 56 cm out of Columbus EL-OS in Candy Apple Red with yellow decals. I hung Campy Record on it. Since this was pre-Internet and digital camera days, I sent a despicable camera to him so he could document the build. Sure regret selling it. Attached are a couple photos I scanned in.
